Makes planting easier and incredibly quick,
This review is from: Garden Auger Bulb Planter 2.75" x 24" Regular Duty
I wish we'd discovered this years ago. After a home-renovation-from-hell, we not only have some major re-landscaping to do, we have to do it all ourselves because we have no more money. I'd read mixed reviews on augers on Amazon and other sites and purchased this the Garden Auger because it seemed pretty sturdy and at 24" is longer than many others (don't have to bend so far). We were not disappointed. We planted 300 bareroot plants in less than an hour. My husband drilled the holes and I came behind him, planted and covered. It worked just as well in a newly prepared bed as it did when we spot drilled in an existing bed. In fact, it seemed to do even better in soil that wasn't as aerated.
It takes a little bit to get used to drilling and I had to use two hands so the torque didn't twist the drill in my hand. But, it's something that you get used to. I knew it would make quick work of the planting, I just didn't think it would be this quick. We're watching our budget very closely but this was well worth the cost. Love it! Can't wait to use it to plant bulbs in the fall.

Super auger. I am a Machinist/Tool Maker and I find this auger to be the best of any that I have looked at. I have used it for fence posts, bulbs, small seedlings and aerating our compost piles.
UPDATE 6/2011: Still going strong after a year of use. I still stand by my review and have not seen another as good.

to use this every day at work. Find it hard to believe that it works that well for that price. Glad I have a extra battery for my drill, and a high torque setting.

OUTSTANDING!!,
This review is from: Garden Auger Bulb Planter 2.75" x 24" Regular Duty
This bulb auger is OUTSTANDING!! I am a cancer survivor and this drill auger SAVED MY BACK planting 3,000 Zoyzia grass plugs! Others have rated this auger LOW because they say it spins in a drill because it is ROUND and needs to be GROUND to have FLAT sides!! - DUHHH: RUBBISH!! They are just VERY SLOW: Not everybody has a GRINDER, like they SUGGEST!! - HOWEVER, EVERYBODY HAS A HAMMER!! Go to an ANVIL (aka: A METAL MANHOLE COVER) and SMASH the auger bit end to make FLAT SURFACES on two sides!! -- WORKS GREATLY!!

This auger bit was rather a disappointment to me. From reading other reviews, I expected to get out with my 18v cordless drill and this bit to quickly plant my 1000+ fall bulbs. It was quickly apparent that the cordless drill would not work well. It would turn the bit and drill a hole, but it would run the brand new large battery down about every 3 holes, so changing batteries got tiring fast! I then hooked up my monstrous electric drill which did run this bit quite well. However, I could only drill 1-3 holes at a time before putting the bulbs in because the dirt would cave back in on the holes as I was drilling the next holes - 6" apart as recommended for these bulbs. So, it was VERY slow to dig a hole, place a bulb, fertilize it, fill the hole, pick up the drill to drill the next hole.... Plus, even though I was digging in 2 foot deep very nice garden soil, no rocks, the drill and bit combo would occasionally yank my arm - felt it nearly broke my wrist one time. I tried drilling very slowly and carefully, but it still would yank me around some. I finally quit with this bit. Went and got a Stihl BT 45 auger from a friend, and this thing rocks! It would easily drill the bulb holes in the flower bed, and it even will drill 18" deep holes for naturalizing bulbs under the trees in our extremely rocky, hard Ozark soil. So, if you have a very few holes to dig, you might try this little auger bit on a drill. But, for major projects, you really should consider a real auger - it is definitely worth it! I will be purchasing one of these babies for myself very soon!

Garden Auger Didn't Save This Gardener from Hand Digging Bulbs,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Good idea in theory, but for me the Garden Auger was useless in anything more than potting soil. It seems strong and well built - it has the appearance that it would hold up to some force without bending. I can't really say much about the Garden Auger itself because I was unable to get more than a half inch into the earth. MAYBE with an industrial strength drill it MAY have not been stopped by the smallest bit of debris and resistance but I doubt I would have been able to hold on. And yes, I adjusted the torque on the drill with no luck.

I was able to plant 200 bulbs in about one and a half hours with this garden auger. It's long enough so you can stand while using it, and it's very sturdy. I used it in my 3/8 inch corded drill. It removes the soil leaving a nice clean hole. Occasionally, I ran into some roots and the auger got stuck. I just reversed the drill direction, and the auger backed right out. I highly recommend this product.

Was so simple that my family squabbled over who got to use it! Will never hesitate to plant bulbs again. Super easy to hook up and drills hole quickly. Must use a corded electric drill (and make sure not be be in reverse -- doesn't work!) Be careful not to drill with too much enthusiasm or the soil will scatter. Drill with the tiniest bit of restraint and dig 150 holes in less than 30 minutes. It was so effective that my Dad was inspired to plant bulbs and I'm going to give one to my brother for Christmas, as soon as they become available again!

Arrived on time and performs exactly as advertised. Hit large stones, roots and other nasties...but it kept going with no damage. It is a very study construction and gets the job done.

Wonderful Bulb Planting Tool,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Garden Auger Bulb Planter 2.75" x 24" Regular Duty
My husband and I were truly shocked at how easy this tool is to use and how effective it is. Prior to this purchase we were digging holes and it was slow and difficult to dig an eight inch hole, since our tools were only good for six inches. We were left with sore elbows and we were discouraged at the amount of time it was taking to plant each bulb and wondering how we would accomplish planting a hundred bulbs before winter arrived in Colorado. After that agonizing first day, my husband found this tool and we decided to order it using our Amazon Prime, so it would arrive in two days. We put the project on hold for those couple of days and the decision really paid off. We were able to plant 60 bulbs easily within 2 hours start to finish. The soil was hardened clay and without the auger it was very hard work to penetrate using a trowel. However, the auger simply drilled right through without a moment of hesitation and it makes a perfect 8 inch hole. A word of caution is that the auger will quickly penetrates buried water irrigation lines during its mission, so if you are using this tool in an area with irrigation hoses it is best to know exactly where they are located before you start. We were working in an area where someone else had installed the water system so my husband has to repair a couple of punctured hoses, but despite that it was still worth it. We recommend this tool to anyone who loves to plant bulbs but wants to get the job done quickly and easily.
