Book Description

September 15, 1993
This book expands the traditional notion of the cutting garden and shows how any part of the garden landscape can provide a wealth of fresh flowers and foliage for glorious year-round arrangements. Written for experts as well as beginners, the book includes sections on trees and shrubs; cutting gardens; double-duty borders; ornamental grasses and modified meadows; conditioning, arranging and drying cut flowers; and forcing branches. The photographs show gardens and plants from across the United States and a wide variety of flower arrangements, both simple and elaborate. Over 60 individual plants are illustrated and discussed in a listing by season of flowers and shrubs suitable for arrangements.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Parke, a gardener in New York state who has written for Horticulture , the New York Times and elsewhere, sensibly combines information about planting and cultivation with advice about the practical art of flower arranging--all inside two covers. A typically lovely Stewart, Tabori & Chang picture book, this one is laid out and illustrated so invitingly that it's all the hand can do to keep from plucking the delphiniums. But stay the hand--and keep reading. If you do, you will learn how grasses can serve in vases; how to harvest and dry flowers and foliage; and how to force blooming. Parke also includes chapters on bulbs and annuals, borders, and a compilation of plant "profiles" with reasonably detailed background information. Many gardeners will want to mull over this volume in the off-season. One reason: the photographs alone. Margonelli ( Invitation to the Garden ) has a special knack with flowers of purple and blue hues; his shots of shaded hydrangeas, campanula and violets are deep, sweet and still.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource, February 29, 2000

This review is from: Garden for Cutting (Hardcover)
Highly recommended for readers who want not only to look at beautiful pictures, but want a complete bibliography of plants including zone information and complimentry plantings. This book demonstrates that you can have beautiful cutting gardens that fit within a landscape rather than separate landscape beds and cutting beds.
