Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These books will help with decorating what has become another room of the home, the garden. Mackenzie gives clearly written instructions for various projects featuring useful garden objects from castoffsDwind chimes from cutlery, fountains from old bucketsDas well as recommendations for plants suited to her container items. The finished projects are shown in color photographs. For those who wish to purchase garden decorative accessories, Hessenberg shows the work of ceramic artists from around the world who design planters, bird baths, benches, fountains, and sculptures for garden use. Each artist's techniques and the materials used are described and color photographs of their work provided. Mackenzie's book is suited for public libraries, while Hessenberg's will be especially useful in professional and large collections.

From Booklist

A more creative approach to junk transformation would be almost impossible to conjure. In fact, even the new objets d'art--boots cum planters, car-mirror chimes, and hoe-and-rake rejuvenations--take a well-disciplined, aesthetic gardener to appreciate and accept. In her first book, magazine stylist Mackenzie does a magnificent job in, first, convincing the reluctant exterior decorator to consider trash as potential treasure and, second, in educating all about perceiving beauty in the oddest of places. Every one of the 30-odd ideas contains elegant color photographs, along with visual and verbal "assembling" instructions. Neither is the practical ignored; the author reviews surface treatments for wood and metal and recommends a tool kit plus specific plants for specific places. How does your recycled garden grow? Yes, growing plants in old shoes, stuff like that. Nothing creative I haven't seen before. This book contains various planters, that is all.

I've been making lamps and clocks for over forty years. I like the challange of creating something out of things others throw away. Crafting with junk, is a passion that is contagious for a lot of people. One person called it mind expansion, another called it good theropy. No matter what you call it, it will make you feel good when you take an item someone through away and turn it into a functional work of art. There are many how to books on the subject of junk. Auto junk yards are a good place to find parts to make nic-nac shelves and many other things. Read blogs and postings for a wealth of information. Old books can be turned into beautiful bookends and a lamp base. Silver ware makes a beautiful wind chime. Have fun crafting.
