Book Description

August 1999
This work provides readers with the necessary information to change the look of their gardens with minimum effort and maximum effect. The book takes the reader through the whole design process in a simple way, avoiding confusing jargon and complex diagrams. It opens with details of how to make lists of what you want and what you need, followed by advice on assessing your site and drawing up a budget. Next, the book shows how to create a design by introducing the garden features of your own choice, adding the details and, finally, how to plant your garden. There is also the problem solver for those difficult sites.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The author opens with advice on making a list of what a gardener would want and need, and he includes a helpful checklist. With 120 color photographs and illustrations and 100 black-and-white drawings, Newbury gives detailed information on every aspect of garden design: elements (walls, patios, steps, fences, trellises, screens, hedges, pergolas, etc.), shapes and proportion, privacy, focal points, problem areas, and "quick and easy transformations" (modification of features already in the garden or adding one or two extra features to an existing layout). A final section, a selection of designs, contains color drawings and a list of suggested plants for low-cost and starter gardens, low-maintenance gardens, formal gardens, plant lover's gardens, and family gardens. This is a valuable guide, but most of the designs would require a larger than average plot. George Cohen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful, and a visual delight - outstanding!, March 15, 1999
Tim Newbury's talent and expertise in landscape design make this a gem of a book - I wanted to walk right into the gardens he illustrates with! He presents designs for a variety of plot shapes, including how to transform awkward shapes into visually appealing areas. He offers low cost starter gardens, low maintenance gardens, formal gardens, plant lover's gardens and family gardens in a wealth of clearly described detail. The book is well indexed and makes an effective reference tool. Do get this one - it's excellent!
