Book Description

September 30, 2008
Between the boundaries of fine and popular art and high and low culture, reside Id driven impulses and alter egos as toys, cartoon characters, and iconic images. From the whimsical to adorable, erotic to innocent, to the dark and gothic, they lure us into their lush worlds of fairy tales, dreams and inspiration. The Garden of Eye Candy introduces us to immaculate illustrations that enshroud the viewer s perception and gives flight to the imagination with each adventure and every character presented. The Garden of Eye Candy introduces an international roster of artists - the fore runners of these Surrealist inspired creations - in a luxurious and exquisite box set. With contributions from Cabizbaja, Candybird, Dolly Didit, Jaime Zollars, Kennys Work, Kukulaland, Lisa Petrucci, Amy Sol, Melanie Florian, Mijnschatje, Noferin, Brandt Peter, Danielle Lamberti, Kokomoo, Majeakann, Mark Bodnar, Rmyers Art, Saul Zanolari, Luke Chueh and more.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Like dolls? Cartoon characters? I do. As a little girl I loved playing with dolls. As an adult I like Adult Swim. And painted dolls. But not art toys. (One's taste does refine with age, of course). I digress. If you like dolls and alter egos and Id-driven characters and cartoons, buy this book. Cause it's all about that. And it comes in a pretty box. The End. --Juxtapoz Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful artbook on illustrations featuring wide-eyed girls, December 29, 2011
By
This review is from: The Garden of Eye Candy (Hardcover)
This is a book celebrating illustration artists (mostly women) from all over the world. They seem to have one thing in common: the love for wide-eyed little girls. The book is mainly a picture book, beautifully printed on black paper. Texts are short and sparse. Most of the illustration art is surreal, even gothic. Some of it is sugary, some of it cute, other illustrations are slightly disturbing, or even morbid. All kinds of techniques and styles are presented, but a general feel of unity neverteless remains. The quality of the artwork remains high throughout. Strongly recommended to lovers of illustration, gothic, and surrealism.

Even if the printing method of this book was more practical and done in a way to showcase the artwork better I would still be underwhelmed by this book. I like about 50% of the artwork, much of it is too cartoony for my tastes. Artwork aside, the thing that really makes this book unsuccessful for me is the paper used which is uncoated and dark making the artwork look very muted and dull.
