4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Light Work
The midi will not replace your regular hedge trimmer. It works best on Heather and other shrubby plants that form compact hedging.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garden Groom - Waste of time.
I purchased a Garden Groom MIDI and after two uses it has broken. The item is constructed mainly of plastic parts and just won't stand up to any sort of use. In additon, there is no warranty on the item -- so if it breaks -- you are just stuck with it. I would not recommend buying this item.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice design - cheap construction., September 23, 2006
The idea of a rotary, safe, mulching hedge-trimmer is great. The letdown is the durability and performance. After two weeks of use the plastic central spindle broke. In addition, it is obviously designed for the less robust hedges of the U.K. and not the woody, thick-leaved ficus, ixora, carissa etc. of the Gulf States. It reminds me of Renault cars, fine for Europe but when equipped with power windows, power steering, air-conditioner (i.e. standard for U.S. cars) the electrical systems proved unreliable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Will not work well on firmer hedges, September 9, 2006
I just purchased the Garden Groom Hedge Clipper. I found it very heavy and awkward to use once it filled up with clippings. On most hedges, other than the softer ones, it will not cut well. One has to make too many passes back and forth to get it to cut properly. Great idea and safe to operate, but not worth the effort. Cutting after awhile is extremely tiring, especially when you have to reach across the hedge and extend your arms for any length of time. I do not recommend it for seniors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does not collect all clippings, June 1, 2007

The worst part of trimming hedges is the clean up. I bought this item since it promised to eliminate this chore and it does, to a point. Not all the clippings are collected and since they are mulched it makes it even more difficult to remove them. The motor blows clippings all over you so be prepared. I do like the recessed blade safety feature but over all I don't think the Groomer is worth the price.

I live on a small property and only have 3 small hedge bushes. It usually only takes me an hour to clip and clean up with a pair of manual hedge clippers. I decided to try an electric trimmer because the manual ones are so hard on my joints and I suffer for a day or two after using them (OK, I'm getting old). I read the manufacturers reviews, watched the videos and even read a fair amount of users reviews. There were negatives but I figured it was because they were trying to do too large of a hedge or something. This is not touted as being a commercial grade product. I liked the idea of it catching the clippings as well so I ordered one. It arrived all shiny new. I read the instructions (simple to operate) and assembled the catcher and went out to trim my hedges. Here's where it all went wrong. Honestly, I don't know who thought this thing was a good Idea but it really was just horrible! Functionally speaking I could (and finally did) do a better job with my old manual trimmers. I got so fed up with the catcher falling off every few moments, and how difficult it was to even make this thing cut anything that I finally boxed it up and sent it back for a refund. Believe me, go get the cheapest electric hedge trimmer and you'll be far happier with the performance and way ahead money wise. Even with the catcher in place (which wasn't very often) it still made a mess that required cleanup. It clogged easily and the "safety" switches made it cumbersome and difficult to run. I don't know how else to say it, I really hate this product. It is a piece of junk if ever there was one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Edge trimmer, July 25, 2007
I purchase the groom trimmer based on some of the reviews given on this site. The concept of the product is very good. The practicality is just okay. It does pick up all the clippings efficiently. It is clumpsy to trim the sides of the trees. You have cut from top down, you can't scoop from left to right. The cut is also not a crisp or I should say clean as the conventional electric cutters. The groomer needs better cutters and a small head. The unit is not as usefull as I thought it would be.

Don't throw away your old hedge cutter yet: this unit leaves a lot to be desired; the concept is good, but it has a lot of design flaws; #1 it should have been cordless(battery operated), dragging a 100 ft. of electric cord around can be a pain, #2 it only operates well across the top of hedges; difficult cutting the sides plus the cuttings fall out, #3 th cuttings container fills up too fast, sometimes you can't even finish 1 schrub before you have to empty it, #4 it can't be used if hedges need to be cut at ground level

3.0 out of 5 stars Will this Producr Last, September 21, 2008
This review is from: Garden Groom "Midi" Collecting Hedge Trimmer (Lawn & Patio)
The product does everything it was represented to do in the TV commercial. I believe the unit is underpowered and that care needs to be taken to keep from overheating the motor. The unit is well balanced for ease of operation. Because of its design it makes triming hedges, such as box wood, particularly easy to create long flat surfaces. It does not work very well on plantings such as yews or arvervita type plants, the main sticks in these are simply to much for the underpowered motor. I will use my unit until it fails and fail it will. I cannot recommend this product because it is not built to last. The design is excellant but the quality is just not there.
