Book Description

June 10, 2010
When nineteen-year-old David Ward climbs the sacred mountain Nináistuko seeking a vision, the golden eagle of earth flings him back onto the prairie and the black horse of dreams shows him the future. Though his eyes are opened, fate hides exactly what he needs to know. David has grown up on a Montana sheep ranch where bluebunch wheatgrass and rough fescue have long served, where the sky detests fences, where the seasons are task masters, where predators and gods strip the impractical from the bone. As life draws him away, he leaves with powerful lessons learned from his grandparents. Jayee, his utilitarian railroad man grandfather, has taught him the language of the plains. Katoya, his mystical Blackfeet grandmother, has taught him the language of the mountains. He soon loses his fluency in both. He meets his first love amongst Indian paintbrush and larkspurs in the high-country of the Garden of Heaven and then becomes separated from her on the far side of Florida's Crooked River in Tate's Hell Swamp. His life shatters into a kaleidoscopic puzzle. David begins finding the widely scattered pieces at the summit of Chogori, the world's most difficult mountain, and on an aircraft carrier deployed to the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War. Others lie upside down in Chicago, Hawai'i, the Philippines and the Netherlands. After he lands a teaching job at a small college in central Illinois, he suspects he was conjured there by a woman standing in the moonlight on Moon Hill. Siobhan, the wise woman in his life tells he will never understand what has happened to him until he can answer the question: "who tried to kill me and why?" As a "light-dancer," he remembers well the alchemists' guiding principle: "By fire is nature renewed whole." He suspects all paths lead to that point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Take a journey of mind and body. April 25, 2011
Format:Paperback
The wisdom of the elders is passed from one age to the next. As this wisdom is passed to the younger age some experience a change in their life while others experience a journey that transcends both time and space. In "Garden of Heaven an Odyssey" we journey with David as he makes the transition from boy to man.
On David's tenth birthday his grandmother, Katoya, gave him a wondrous gift - magic. Not just any magic, but the magic of nature and the secrets the universe holds in that magic. With the help of Maisto, the black raven, Katoya demonstrates how that magic works and also sets David on a path that he will travel long into his life.

As he grows and learns the ways of his people from Katoya he also learns the common sense and hard work of life from his parents and grandfather. All of these lessons combine to shape the man he will become. However, the journey of the universe often takes unusual turns and David finds himself with both lost time and memory. As he puts the puzzle of his journey together he is introduced to multiple and varied individuals; all of whom are there for a reason.

Will David put together the pieces of the puzzle and truly understand the journey of his life? How will his journey impact his friends and family?

"Garden of Heaven an Odyssey" is the culmination of author Malcolm R. Campbell's imagination and attention to detail. It is this fountain of detail that anchors his story between reality and the dream realm. Campbell develops characters that possess a certain depth and connectivity. The vivid settings will entice your senses and elicit memories in the minds of the readers.

"Garden of Heaven an Odyssey" is the fourth novel published by author Malcolm R. Campbell. Like the odyssey novels of old this epic is sure to capture your mind as you twist and turn through an ever morphing journey until you reach the end. I recommend this book to those with a vivid imagination and a mind ready to see a larger scene.

A journey is more than simply traveling. It allows much for introspection. "Garden of Heaven" tells of the travels of David Ward, a young man who is out to piece together his life after the Vietnam war and the failure of love. Traveling throughout the world across many continents, he gains an appreciation through the world in a tale that blends the natural with the mystical. "Garden of Heaven" is a thought provoking novel, recommended.
