May 2000
The aim of this work is to show something of what can be achieved in lighting a garden and to give advice on how to achieve it by practical and affordable means. Starting by defining some of the more common terms, it goes on to discuss the nature and qualities of light, and follows with advice on how to plan a lighting scheme. Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Davidson, author of The Complete Home Lighting Book (1997), goes beyond the concept of a single floodlight placed high on a wall to discourage intruders. He explains the technical terms and definitions of light, equipment, and accessories (watts and volts, projectors, lamps, transformers, luminaries, and lenses) and the principles of lighting design. There's a chapter on planning your garden lighting and one offering a multitude of ideas. They include ways to light trees, shrubs, lawns, rocks, fences, walls, sculptures, decks, terraces, arbors, gazebos, paths, and driveways. Davidson also offers advice on lighting pools, waterfalls, streams, terraces, and buildings such as a conservatory. All 128 pages contain color photographs and drawings. George Cohen

3.0 out of 5 stars expert opinion, July 12, 2000

This review is from: Garden Lighting: Contemporary Exterior Lighting (Hardcover)
Well-written, organized and illustrated but curiously out-of-date for
a book published in 1999. Very little about low voltage lighting which
must be a rarity in the UK (this is a Brit book). The emphasis is on
"mains" lighting (240v in the UK, 120v in the US) and the
recommended lamp types and wattages are much too intense for
residential projects. Definitely not a DIY book; the author states:
"Before anybody electrocutes him- or herself and reaches for a
lawyer, I say now-leave electricity to a qualified electrician."
Some nice photographs (and some strange ones too) but many of the
night lighted scenes were photographed well before dusk and did not
provide the kind of view that one would experience after dark.
