This authoritative new series of guidebooks to the gardens of Europe is the perfect companion for any garden enthusiast, whether tourist or armchair traveler. Each title is a richly illustrated in-depth guide to over 100 gardens, from the famous to little-known hidden treasures, and features colorful photography and easy-to-read illustrations commissioned especially for this series. Also included are maps, directions, complete visitor information, special features, and neighboring sites of interest.
Each guide, written by a gardening expert, begins with a comprehensive background on the country's garden history and local climate. The most significant gardens in each volume are featured in even greater detail, accompanied by illustrated plans of the gardens and close-up views of particular features. The numerous color photographs and maps show travelers what awaits at each garden. The Garden Lover's Guide's are indispensible aids for those planning European travel itineraries.

The Garden Lover's Guide to Germany includes the formal schemes of Herrenhausen and the expansive landscape of Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau's garden at Worlitz.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A new series of richly illustrated garden tour books can be your ticket to seeing the best of Europe's horticultural legacy. Each of The Garden Lovers Guides explores more than 100 of that country's most beautiful gardens, all open to the public. Written by top international gardening experts like Penelope Hobhouse and Patrick Taylor, these guidebooks stress history and national identity as the keys to understanding the very different characteristics of each country's gardens. Vestiges of Roman times can still be seen in Italian gardens, and in Germany, many splendid gardens in the east have just been opened to a wider audience in the last few years. The maps make garden touring easy to organize." -- Hemisphere

The British may have too much influence on American horticulture, but their zeal for garden touring remains inspiring. When traveling, there are few more pleasant ways to spend a day than by strolling in a historic landscape or by scoping out someone's else's borders. The latest installments in the Princeton Architectural Press's handy series of Garden lover's Guides (800-722-6657) will open up new paths in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the northeastern United States. -- House & Garden

This is an interesting book if you like large public gardens. As this is one of a series of books about gardens in various countries I would imagine they are all similar in set up.The listings are easy to follow. They are set by region, then are listed alphabetically. They give brief histories of each and on the margins list open/closing times and special interest spots as well as further info info. They have some beautiful pictures but this is not a coffee table oversized book.It is truly a guide. They have expanded coverage on five noted German gardens , though I was disappointed that Wilhelmshohe in Kassel wasn't on of them.Of course Sanssouci is included along with Worlitz.Mainau, Schwetzingen and Herrenhausen outside of Hannover. This book takes you to some rather more little known places besides all the well known public and private gardens.I give it 4 stars because I think it could have expanded on at least a few more gardens,as well as perhaps included some more full page photographs. But if you want a guide for an upcoming vacation to Germany and are a garden lover, this book would be a must.
