3.0 out of 5 stars many ideas for a DIY home landscaper, February 5, 2009
The title 'Garden Planning' is a little misleading. This book is loaded with ideas for your yard and the pictures are wonderful. That said, if you are a seasoned gardener as I am and want new ideas for your vegetable or flower garden there are many other books that are better. If you want to work in your yard and are looking for SPECIFIC themes try something else.

But, if you are interested in landscaping your yard and want general ideas then this is a handy book to carry around. It touches base on lots of topics such as gardening with containers, architectural plants, rock gardens, garden furniture, scented plants, two-tier gardens, small gardens, rock gardens, raised beds, using color and texture, windows gardens, etc. As you can see, many topics are covered- just not with a lot of depth.

So if you want to garden in small spaces get All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. If you'd like to use containers try McGee & Stuckey's Bountiful Container: Create Container Gardens of Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits, and Edible Flowers by Rose Marie Nichols McGee and Maggie Stuckey. If you are interested in using sedums or cactus in your landscape try Designing with Succulents by Debra Lee Baldwin. Nevertheless, if you have a dominant idea of what you want to do in your yard try evaluating a different book using that particular concept.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Garden Design Idea Book, October 9, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Garden Planning (Reader's Digest Home Handbooks) (Paperback)
Editor John Brookes brings us Garden Planning full of color photographs and illustrations covering all types of garden elements for a small city apartment to a large estate. The concept of the book is excellent, but the topics covered are too limited and narrowly covered. Not a bad title for those who want a starting point in planning their garden.
