Good plant selection guide for beginning gardeners,
By
This review is from: Best Garden Plants for Virginia (Paperback)
This attractive handbook is a basic guide for beginning gardeners for selecting plants that will do well in the state. Plants are arranged alphabetically in sections of Annuals, Perennials, Trees & Shrubs, Roses, Vines & Groundcovers, Bulbs, Corms & Tubers, Herbs and Ferns & Ornamental Grasses. Each plant profile includes a nice color photo and minimal information on growing conditions, tips and cultivar recommentations. An okay guide for the beginning gardener - if you are looking for in-depth information, you may want to look elsewhere.

While this book is not a comprehensive volume, it does cover the most common landscape plants in the Virginia landscape. There is a strong emphasis on older varieties of plants and those that are BEST suited to the climate conditions of Virginia.
For a new resident of Virginia who likes to do amatuer landscaping, this book is indispensible.

the book is called best garden PLANTS for virginia but that is the first misstatement of this publication. Among other things it leaves out Vegetables and fruits entirely.
The blurb on the back calls it practical and inspiring and it is also not that at all. It is not practical, because it doens't even give you as much information as can be found on teh back of a seedling package in various instances. It also doesn't even mention anything about the plant's toxicity, which is a necessary information for garden plants if you have children. Inspiring? It is an incomprehensive list of plants which may or may not grow well in Virginia's versatile terrain and the writing is as inspirational as the back of an unimaginative seedling package. I don't doubt that putting this thing together was quite some work for the people involved and finding pictures of all the plants from stock (because they are sure not all actually been taken for this book) will have been a challenge BUt it would have taken littel more than what they had done to turn this book into something really useful I fear the *writers* were held hostage by teh format which would have been serevvd better by smaller pictures and more information. I am thoroughly disapointed.

Simple easy to understand information presented in a such a way that it is awesome for the beginner gardener, someone new to Virginia's climate or experienced gardeners looking for a quick reference guide as a reminder. Would also make a great housewarming or bridal shower gift IMHO.
