This book is invaluable!, May 30, 2010
This review is from: Garden Problem Solver (Paperback)
As a relatively new gardener, I have all sorts of questions, not only about planting and how to take care of various plants, but questions such as, "What is this funny-looking bug doing on my plant--is it harming my plant, or is it one of the "good guys"; or "Why has this leaf turned yellow, or why are these leaves riveted with holes?" Questions such as, "When is the best time to prune a flowering shrub, or an evergreen; what can I do about these tree roots that bulge out of the ground, or how can I tell what kind of soil I am using and is it fertile?" are just a few of the ones answered. This DK published book carries through with its reputation of fine illustrations, which in this case, clarify exactly what the author is explaining in the text. There are too many topics and chapter headings to include all of them here, but just to give you a sampling of coverage: garden trees, hedges/screens, ornamental shrubs, propagating plants, annuals/biennials, perennials, seed sowing and gathering, bulbs, roses, lawncare, walls and fences, site clearance, patios, paths, container planting, allergies/aches and pains, vegetable plot, fruit gardening, improving the soil, weeds and weeding, pests and diseases, and maintenance and storage.
I highly recommend this book by Pippa Greenwood, a renowned gardening expert, and the American Horticultural Society. DK published books are at the top of the list for finely illustrated, informational material. I continually refer to this book for garden problem solving. It is invaluable!
