Book Description

April 15, 1998 6 and up
A garden's brilliance reflects the care and skill of its gardener. In this vibrant photo-essay, young children are introduced to the lively world of gardening.

The clear and informative text explains tips of the trade, like the importance of compost and worms to nourish plants of all kinds, and the right time of year to plant bulbs. Lavish photographs, many of which were taken in the Children's Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, bring this much-loved hobby to life. Children will learn that gardening isn't difficult, it just takes time and patience. And best of all, the results can be both beautiful and delicious. A brief glossary is also included.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?A photo-essay about gardens through the seasons. The beautiful full-color photographs seem to have come first, leaving a problem with the text. Sometimes the captions are vague and philosophical: "Within a garden, the cycles and rhythms of life?plant and animal?are clear to see." Sometimes it seems as if readers are being instructed: "Annual flowers are planted later, when the air and soil temperatures are warmer." The word "annual" is italicized and is defined with seven other words in a glossary at the back of the book. Many races and ages of people are shown in a variety of settings. This is a pretty book, but the narrative is random and confusing.?Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME

Review

"Lush, crisp photographs infused with every shade of green draw children into a celebration of planning, planting, and tending a garden.... Garden goes a long way toward sparking enthusiasm for this rewarding activity." --The Horn Book

4.0 out of 5 stars Garden by Robert Maas, May 12, 2000

This review is from: Garden (Hardcover)
This is a lovely book to use for introducing kids to the joys of gardening. The photographs are clear, rich and enticing. You can almost smell the fresh dirt! My elementary school library patrons have loved having this book as part of a display to lure children into the school garden and the work that goes with it. The text on the first few pages is charmingly poetic but hard for young readers to read or even understand when read aloud. However, once the book gets into the details of gardening, the text is clear, concise and teaches key vocabulary with italics and a nice glossary at the back. The kids loved the photos, especially seeing so many different kids working different jobs in the garden.
