4.0 out of 5 stars Five times a charm for Barbara Freethy in Angel Bay, September 20, 2011
By
Kim Adams (Honolulu, Hawaii) - See all my reviews
GARDEN of SECRETS is the fifth book in the Angel's Bay series. Yet it can be read as a standalone story. I was intrigued by the characters that Freethy offered in this "small town" romance - Charlotte is a minister's daughter who became an OB/GYN doctor. She returns home after her father's death. Andrew is her high school boyfriend with whom she had a painful breakup. He is now the minister at her father's church. Joe is the recently divorced Police Chief. As Charlotte considers her attraction to both, she finds she has competition from her high school nemesis, Pamela. Then Charlotte accidently becomes the leading suspect in the attack on Pamela's sister and the mayor's wife. Looking at what I just wrote, it seems to lean toward soap operadom. Yet Freethy delivers a charming story with the independent heroine's yearning for love, flawed heroes seeking to fulfill that role, and some community angst to stir things up in Angel's Bay.

3.0 out of 5 stars I cant believe I am writing this, September 26, 2011
I have loved almost every book Barbara Freethy has written. I like her combination of make believe and reality. Her books are sweet romance with some mystery. In these books our supernatural have been the angels of Angel Bay. I loved everyone of the Angel Bay series and have been waiting for Joe and Charlotte's story. We have seen hints of their story through out the series. I am sorry to say I was disappointed

Charlotte an ob/gyn cames home to help her mother (after Charlotte's dad died)with whom she has a estranged relationship. Something happened to Charlotte as a teen and her mom covered it up. Joe the chief of police came to Angel Bay and is starting a new life. He is getting a divorce from his high school honey. The two of them grew apart. All of this was part of the Angel Bay series. Now we have Charlotte's story. Her high school boyfiend wants her back. He is now the local minister. Joe is investigating a crime and Charlotte is a suspect. Truth be told she isn't much of suspect. She was near the scene of the crime. Charlotte's mother continues to be annoying in this book. My problem with this book was Andrew the high school boyfriend now minister. He adds nothing to this story. He has a secret which isn't much of a secret. I read it and thought ---big deal. He was a nusance to me. I never bought that Charlotte was interested in him again. More time on the mystery of the stolen jewerly and less time on Andrew/Charlotte would have been better.

I will continue to buy BF's books but this one was a let down to me.

There is a potential new character in this book, Gabe that could be interesting. He is only mentioned in a chapter. He was in the military with Jamie and comes to Angel Bay to bring Jamie home. I don't want to read about Jamie(charlotte's brother) or Andrew in a book of there own. Jamie seems as dull as Andrew.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Angel's Bay so far!, September 24, 2011

LOVED IT

***slight spoilers***

You would think have two men attracted to you would be a good thing, but for Charlotte, the local OBGYN, it has thrown her world into a tailspin. After being back in Angel's Bay for a year after what she had hoped would be a quick visit has turned more permanent. Andrew, her boy friend from high school has reappeared back in her life and she agrees to meet him at the New Year's eve party given by her rival's sister. This is the guy who cheated on her and is now the local minister. At this same party, Joe, the town's chief of police is there and she is extremely attracted to him. So, what should Charlotte do?

Well, when the hostess is almost murdered and Charlotte is found with the body and covered in blood, things get really sticky. Especially since this was the sister of the girl who cheated with Andrew! So when Pamela shows up to help her sister, things get even worse. There are some seriously fun moments in this story Joe is spending a lot of time going over the case with her and I got the sense that he would like to review a bit more than the case. The wonderful thing about this series is that you don't need to read them in order to enjoy them. The books each stand on their own and yes, some of the characters overlap in the series, but that doesn't detract from any of the stories. This is just a fun and super quick read filled with a bit of sex, mystery and tension.
