The book gives an excellent listing of sources for seeds that are hard to find as well as a description of various characteristics of the plants. Vey useful for someone who wishes to grow a variety of vegetables.

Well I'm not going to lie pictures would be great but if they did pictures for every one of the plants it'd end up being multiple volumes. My two reasons for giving 4 stars instead of 5 are this: no index and alot of the plants don't have USDA zone numbers. I understand that some plants don't have a lot information but maybe half in here don't have USDA zone and a lot don't have any info at all. I wouldn't mind it except that the product description says "As traditional plant breeding gives way to bioengineering and patented varieties, it has become even more important to recognize and preserve our rich vegetable legacy: seeds brought to this country by immigrants from every corner of the world, or developed here by farmers and breeders for superior taste, regional adaptability, disease resistance, and other virtues. " It kinda implies that there will be detailed information on the different varieties and for a lot there just isn't any info, even for something so well known as Brandywine Tomatoes the USDA zone isn't even mentioned for any of the varieties, much less disease resistances, and regional preferences. I gave it 4 stars because as a source book its still top notch. I wish they'd come out with an herbs and spices version of this.
