This stuff is great! No artificial dyes is soooo important! And I can't keep them away from this food!Of course, as some of the other reviews say, this is just sugar, and you CAN make your own...by boiling table sugar and water, then letting it cool. If you have the time and inclination to do all that, then boil away! If you don't, then this is a great product! The beauty of this is that it dissolves very quickly in water with NO BOILING! Hint: If you wanna attract hummingbirds with a new feeder make the first batch or two a bit sweeter! :)

Of course its just sugar water, but it makes just the right strength for hummingbirds, so no guessing! We make the whole box and store it in the fridge, which is a good idea because you don't want more nectar in the feeder than will be gone in a WEEK. The feeder HAS TO BE CLEANED once a week or the hummers can get sick! So no sense filling it up just to throw it out. Also, hummingbirds are VERY territorial and do not share a feeder knowingly. If you want the best results, put out two or three feeders out of sight of each other (and out of the sun) so the birds think they have privacy. The photos you might see with flocks of hummers at a feeder are mock-ups -- that just does not happen because one bird will immediately chase the other off. And, with several feeders, you can still have one up when one is down for cleaning and filling. Our favorite feeder is the Sunset Vista Garden Sunset Vista Designs Garden Rainbow Collection Marbles Hummingbird Feeder - Clear Bottle which is extra long, so hung from the eaves over the window it puts the birds right at eye level over the kitchen sink - awesome viewing! Also, its shatter proof glass and easy to clean with a baby bottle brush, and no dripping, so no ants! In addition, it has ONE spout (all you really need) that makes it real hard for larger birds to hitchhike, so the nectar doesn't swing around under their weight and run out the spout, wasting it. (Thirsty birds WILL try!) There is no need to color the nectar as hummingbirds will SMELL it. Some pros say to make the nectar extra strong the first time and the birds will quickly locate the new feeder.

I like that I am not feeding any artificial colors to 'my' hummingbirds. This blends up quickly and I have had great success feeding lots of birds with Garden Song.
