All metal/ Indestructable construction,
By Martha Stewardess (Nevada) - See all my reviews

I am a novice gardener (which may explain my problem with breaking hand shovels- maybe I'm "using" them wrong?) I started gardening last year and have broken around 6 hand shovels. We do have rather hard dirt here in the desert yet I really think the problem is poor construction of most hand spades, not my digging method. Hence my motivation to find a sturdy all metal one piece hand shovel. This little gem has not disappointed. It's fairly large yet ergonomic. The handle is coated in thick plastic and the spacing is a perfect fit for your fingers. The leather strap can actually be a little annoying and get in your way if you don't keep it around your wrist. One edge is sharp and can be used to cut roots etc. Well worth the money since it should last forever and you won't have to keep replacing any more broken shovels!! I would also suggest this as a gift for any gardeners you know or love as it is hard to find such a indestructible trowel (even in specialty stores) and I'm certain this will be well appreciated!

Got mine at a Huntington Botanical Gardens sale years ago but didn't really appreciate it until we moved into Northwest dandelion territory. Not only can you plant with it, but it is a champion dandelion root remover. Can't break it no how, no way. Worth every penny, though there are more comfortable planting trowels. There also a very narrow version for tighter quarters.

The Best Garden Trowel Ever,

I bought this trowel over ten years ago and nicknamed it "Digger O'Dell" and dig it did. As an older person, I find I have more strength and better leverage when I work on my knees and this sturdy instrument allows me to push easily into the ground. It helped plant bulbs, seeds, transplants, and dug up weeds. Because the steel is solid into the plastic handle it can't "bend" as so many of the cheaper versions do. Unfortunately last fall, it developed "legs" and has moved on to (hopefully) equally appreciative owners. So I am elated to find that it is still available. It is a great investment.

This is a great trowel. I've had over a year and have very rocky clay soil so have to use as a wedge, pick, one hand, both hands (this is just for a small hole) I have tough soil conditions and this thing has stood up. I like the depth/length too. Highly recommend.

I love this trowel. I lost my old one mine and was glad to find it again...I've never seen it in any of the big box stores. The tip helps dig through tough soil and the scooped sides are big enough to make planting go much faster - and cleaner. I also like the bright red handle. I have am easily distracted and put my trowel down for my pruners then forget where I put it. All gardeners should have one of these!
