It didn't dig up anything and even when the soil was real loose it still wouldn't work.

This is one of the first products that was direct marketed to the public using infomercials. I remember being very young in the 1980's and watching the gardeners on TV happily using their Garden Weasels and winning the war against weeds! And so easy to clean up!
Well here I am almost 30 years older and finally planting my first serious vegetable garden. It's so beautiful and promising, but after a recent downpour there came weeds sprouting up everywhere! Almost blanketing the garden!
The infomercial from the 80's had a delayed reaction, but as soon as I had the idea of getting the Garden Weasel I KNEW it was the solution for me.
So I just bought one and I'm pretty happy with it. It ripped up the ground and gave the soil a pleasing fresh broken up texture, and it ripped out the young weed shoots. I had to put more weight into it than I remember the seniors did in the infomercial and on the website, but it was relatively easy to use.
I wasn't able to get extremely close to the plants because the Garden Weasel's tines kept wanting to grab my vegetable leaves and suck them into the tiney devastation, but I was able to eradicate the vast majority of the weeds. I'm a little concerned that the Garden Weasel might not have turned up the roots of the persistent grass that keeps wanting to take over. The grass is one that propagates through underground runners, so if the root isn't pulled out it will probably keep growing, and I doubt the garden weasel disrupted those roots enough. So I may end up out there again in a couple of weeks, but that's okay. Part of the fun of gardening is working in the garden, right? As long as it's not back breaking and doesn't take forever.
This seems like a pretty great tool. It works well, and cleans up well.

I read the reviews and bought this product with my eyes wide open, but still held out hope that it would cultivate my heavy Maryland clay soil. It does, but only if the soil has already been worked and is somewhat loose. Otherwise, it just scrapes the top. Now that I've turned the soil, the Weasel is useful in pulling up weeds and keeping it loose. I doubt that will be the case when the soil gets baked in the summer. The product appears to be well-built; just keep your expectations in line with your soil condition.

I purchased this item for the lawn so I could loosen the soil in the bare spots. As Long as the soil is not too dry it worked great. The teeth are very sturdy. Im happy with the product.

Here's what you won't be use this tool for:

- weeding in hard packed dry dirt.
- weeding in dense established or mature weeds or grass
- weeding in tight spots between garden plants in tight spacing
- tilling dirt to prepare for planting.
- breaking/aerating hard soil, clay or otherwise
- shredding or mulching dirt and weeds that have not already been worked.

Here's what you WILL be using this tool for:

You've built your beds in your garden, be they raised or not raised, and supplied those beds with a nice mix of rich dirt, compost, and other organic material. But you've delayed in putting your transplants in the raised beds. After a couple of good rains, the dirt you brought in had seeds in it and you see weeds/grass starting to sprout. BINGO. You take your garden weasel, and just shred it all up. Your mix is already soft, all you are doing is churning it up. Much easier than using a traditional hoe to knock down the sprouts.

A similar scenario would be that you've done the above, but have already put your plants in, and have nice neat rows, and space to roll this tool. You could use this tool again, to churn up the sprouting weeds.

In other words, your beds should already look pretty good. Lets say you got one big weed that sprouted in your well maintained beds. You'd just pull it out by hand. Problem solved. But what if you get those spring days, where it's just gusting wind. After a recent rain, you'll wake up and could find hundreds of little sprouts in your beds. Picking each sprout would take forever. This tool works great for that. It will also take a soft bed where the soil is starting to get smooth on the surface, and churn it up nicely.

One last time. No hard dirt. No heavy established weeds or grass in hard dirt. If you have those things, you need at least a 5hp tiller, not a weasel.

This Garden Weasel works well and it's very sturdy. It requires some effort to push into the dirt, but any type of equipment used for weeding takes some effort. It doesn't always pull up the weeds, but it loosens up the dirt so you can pull the roots out easily by hand. It's nice that each wheel is removable so you can weed in tighter spots.

Year after year I've battled weeds in my vegetable garden. For whatever reason, no matter how hard I've tried to eradicate them, they keep coming back. Moreover, a lot of them have deep roots, which means that one isn't going to get rid of them unless one is able to get rid of the entire root. (Or unless one uses Round-up or Weed-be-gone, which isn't recommended around vegetables.) So, when my wife bought me a Garden Weasel weeder a couple years back I thought we had solved the problem.

However, there were (and still are) two problems. First, the Garden Weasel doesn't penetrate very well into heavy clay soil (which is what we have). I've worked on the soil extensively over the years, but after all this time, it's still primarily clay. The Garden Weasel simply isn't strong enough nor its tines large enough to penetrate below the immediate surface of such soil. So, it really can't be used for tilling or anything more than the minimum summertime maintenance. Second, because it doesn't penetrate much below the surface it's not going to get rid of weeds that have deep roots. Moreover, when it comes to viny weeds (and we have plenty of those as well) the weeds get caught among the tines and mostly just clog them, meaning that one has to stop and remove the weeds before proceeding.

In sum, the Garden Weasel may work for mid-growing-season maintenance. (Even then, one has to expend more physical effort than the TV commercials make it appear to be necessary.) For anything more than this, a sturdier, more effective tool is required. Give me my sturdy old garden hoe any day.
