Background you can skip
We have a pretty large yard (4 acres) and wifey has planted it abundantly with roses, ground cover, young trees and so forth. The problem is that she was always on her knees with either a hedge trimmer or garden shears to clip the grass from around the plants. This made for hard work.
So she set out to solve the problem and bought a basic Sun Joe electric grass shear.
It did not last long as the batteries ran out WAY fast and there was no easy way to get the work done quickly: still a lot of crawling around and associated back pain and cramped hands. It finally died and she replaced it with a Black & Decker. That one was worse: the battery lasted a little over 30 minutes and took forever to recharge. It was not a success and ended up in the abandoned tool bin.

About the 8893-U and the extension handle
Finally we shelled out for this 8893-U shear by Gardena and the optional extension handle. I believe the technology of the shears comes from Husqvarna. It promised a long lasting battery, solid build and an extension handle that would make it the perfect fit. Except for the steep price.

Here are our pros and cons:

PROS:
- Battery lasts well over 1 hr of continuous use. We were able to get the entire job done in one go. That's superb. Other required 3 runs/recharges to get this far,
- The telescopic handle is a great option: saves your back
- The wheels make it easy to walk around with: relives strain from your arms
- The cutting head can be angled up or down
- The cutting head can be replaced with another or different one
- Its solid quality but light weight

CONS
- EXPENSIVE!! Basically 4 to 5 times as expensive as the cheaper brands.

Bought this to replace an old NiCad Black & Decker cordless grass shears that was on it's last legs. Rather pricy but it works very well - almost too well. It cuts grass so fast that I found myself having to be careful not to cut too much or too deeply.

I bought the 7.2v Li version (8893) for more power and longer interval before recharging. The Gardena models that have an "8" as their 3rd number are 3.6v and cost less. These shears are very sharp and this device trimmed all the grass I wanted to cut very quickly. I checked the remaining charge and it still gave me a "fully charged" light afterwards.

I must state that these are much more expensive than I'd like but if you're tired of messing with underpowered cordless grass shears that don't hold full charges for very long then this will do the trick.

I've bought every brand of grass shears available at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and was frustrated with the poor quality. I talked to a fellow who does lawncare and he suggested the Gardena. He saved my life and my knees. These are high-quality shears that do the job quickly and efficiently. They cost more but I have spent so much more on the many cheaper shears that didn't work. I threw the old ones away--didn't even want to give my last pair (only used a couple of times) to Goodwill as they were junk.

Ryobi used to make an excellent shears, but was unable to find a suitable replacement since they disappeared from the market... Until now... The Gardena 8863-U, though pricey, is the best power shears we have ever used... It has no competition... B&D? Cheap, underpowered, short life... If you've serious trimming to do, this is it...

We bought this item in February. By the time we could use it we were unable to return it due to being over 30 days. I understand the return policy.

The first time we used it the battery lasted about 1 1/2 hours, worked great. When we went to recharge it the red light came on indicating a charge problem. The book says to remove and replace charger cord from the shears. Plugged the charger back in and same result, several times! So I go to the book and the nearest service center is in Canada. Send emails to Gardena website for assistance and to date no response. Check Gardena's home site for replacement parts and there are no replacement parts listed for this product. No replacement parts listed in the book for this product.

So now I am stuck with a very pricey pair of shears that I cannot charge, get support in the USA or purchase replacement parts for.

The next question: WHY IS AMAZON SELLING A PRODUCT WITH NO SUPPORT IN THE USA? Don't have an answer at this time.

This is my experience with this product and recommend folks in US stay away from it.

I researched. I read the reviews. I also purchased the telescopic handle with this product. As instructed, I charged the battery overnight on the first charge. Everything such as indicator lights all operated exactly as the manual advised. The next day I took it out into my yard, the handle snapped on easily, and the clippers operated like advertised - a smooth powerful motor with sharp blades. It cut through my well-maintained seashore-paspalum grass like butter. I use for under a fence area, around the pool deck, and edge near a wall surrounding my property. In other words, I put it to work. So far, so good.
