I expect these to last for a long time.

For one, I had to screw the various connectors in very tightly to keep them from leaking (but once attached, switching hose attachments was quick and easy).

The metal alloy is of very high quality.

I've been sick and tired of screwing and unscrewing hoses and bibs and nozzles for years. Dealing with washer fatigue and thread tape to keep everything a leak free as possible has been a pain. Plus the only hose bib is on the side of my house, about 75 feet away from where I actually need to use it and through a gate that I prefer to keep locked. This quick change system works far better than I expected. What a time saver to quickly remove my hand nozzle at full pressure with just a few drops lost using just the index finger and thumb, then plug it directly into my Gardena oscillating sprinkler (tilted away from me, of course)again with little if any lost water. It does take a little more pressure to insert the hose into the sprinkler because of the extra pressure the automatic seal needs to overcome, but just about anyone but severe arthritis sufferers or the relatively frail will have no problem doing it. Need a longer hose? connect two lengths together on the fly under full pressure. Need to switch out to a soaker hose, you can do it in seconds. Amazing.

I opted for the premium set because I generally have better luck with metal fixtures. They are fairly hefty, but they still have plastic sleeves and other parts. Is it better than the all plastic version? Those came with my sprinkler, and I haven't noticed a difference after about a month, but there might be a difference over time. If you just want to test out the system, the less expensive set will probably work just fine. The average gardener will probably choose to buy several sets eventually for all their connections,so you can opt up later if you like.

If you're on the edge, go for it. It's the best gardening tool I've bought for under $20.

I'm using these quick connects because they came with the Gardena Retractable Hose Reel I installed a few months ago. I went back and forth on whether I'd give these a 3-star ("It's OK) versus a 4-star ("I like it!") rating, and leaned towards 4-stars, with the following disclaimer:

>> I don't plan to keep these; in the long run, they're not durable like brass quick connects.

That's fair, right? When purchased in 2-set pairs like this, they're surprisingly more as costly as the durable and equally drip-free Orbit Brass Hose Quick Connects that I favor. And these connectors are actually easier to use, requiring less hand pressure to engage and release, are lighter weight, and in some cases (not this model) featuring a "quarter twist to lock" feature to further guard against accidental disengagement.

But the problem comes in the day-to-day mundane duties of actual yard work and clean-up, which involves dragging hoses along concrete patios, dropping spray nozzles (whether intended or not), and putting a wrench to a tight fitting adapter to loosen it (or to tighten it, if it's dripping).

Already, one of my hose end pieces (a piece similar to the one with the orange collar and black trim in the Amazon photo) didn't survive a drop from about waist height onto a paving stone. I might overlook it if these were cheaper to replace, but that's the reason I'm sticking with brass.

So purely from a functional standpoint, these are easy to use, leak-free, and reasonably well constructed. But beyond that, you need to evaluate for yourself whether you can treat these with the respect they require, or if you need something that will stand up to a heavy trashing.

This is the metal starter kit, where the female receivers are made with metal threader pieces instead of the plastic ones.

This is definitely a great product, especially the 'stop' female receiver that will shut of the water when your remove the male plug. This is great for changing the nozzles as you no longer have to shut off the water to change these out.

Great product!

I love the Gardena Quick Connect system, and purchased both the metal and plastic couplings (hose end). After all, isn't metal better than plastic? Turns out not with these. The plastic ends work like a dream, and the metal one is hard to insert, hard to dis-attach, and fussy and frustrating all over. I'm buying more plastic ones. http://www.amazon.com/Gardena-36917-Garden-Quick-Connector/dp/B00004SDYI/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&qid=1399051931&sr=8-38&keywords=gardena

They are well built. They stop the water when disconnecting pieces. I use them while washing my car, changing out soap sprayer, nozzle, and brush. They work really well; exactly what I needed. I tried a couple of other connectors, and they were cheap compared to these.

I do like this set. It fits my needs and is much more durable than the store bought brand I started with originally. I use the quick connection only twice a week or so.
I just wish that I could easily buy just one more two more pieces as I need them.

These connects are FANTASTIC! I have a motor home and the water connection is hard to get to; with Gardena connects it is now no problem. I was surprised to find they were mostly made of metal. Well made and do not leak!

Update 1/21/2014: I turned on my outdoor water faucet yesterday and found out my female Gardena QC did not let any water through (it is working correctly and is supposed to do this!). The problem is that I should have used a male connector on the faucet and a female connector on the hose. My water faucet valve is actually under the house thus protecting it from freezing but with the Gardena QC connected water remains outside between the valve and QC and could potentially freeze. The high tomorrow is going to be 25 degrees! I removed my Gardenia QC and let all the water drain out of my faucet.
