5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for every gardener's library
Eileen Powell's book is my gardening bible. It's extremely comprehensive in covering all aspects from growing the over 500 different plants from seed. Not a "seed grower"? ... no problem - the detail on care, growing conditions, water, soil, pests, etc. is why this book is my number one garden library resource. I highly recommend it - and it won't ever go...

3.0 out of 5 stars ok
it's a good book, but not being a gardener I was looking for a section that would guide me what to plant and when showing all the flower options for each season. Now I need to get another book that has all that, hence I rate the book 3*.

5.0 out of 5 stars Follow the directions and get results, May 10, 2004

This review is from: The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom: 576 annuals, perennials, and bulbs in full color (Potting-Bench Reference Books) (Paperback)
Eileen Powell's The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom provides detailed information on germination, growing and care in a format that is easy to read. She also provides the growing zone in large print, so you can quickly skip the plants that will not grow in your area. The information useful for planning a garden is in a separate section from the care of each plant. This allows the planning information to be organized into tables that allow the reader to easily choose plants for time of bloom, height, color, light and soil requirements. She also lists the hardiness and heat zones in the planning tables.

I only wish I could find a similar book for unusual vegetables and herbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really and truly useful, August 9, 2004

This review is from: The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom: 576 annuals, perennials, and bulbs in full color (Potting-Bench Reference Books) (Paperback)
When a friend recently asked me to suggest a book that would tell her the soil preferences of different flowers, I knew exactly what she needed. The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom has all the answers. In addition to concise profiles of 500 bloomers, there's a handy gallery of color photographs and my favorite section, a 50-page chart that lists major and minor species along with their bloom times, colors, and cultural requirements. This book is designed to be useful, and it is!

This review is from: The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom: 576 annuals, perennials, and bulbs in full color (Potting-Bench Reference Books) (Paperback)
This book is exactly what I was looking for-- a no-nonsense, complete description of how to start each of the many kinds of seeds that I can never resist buy, collecting, or trading for.

One thing that people should note, though: the plants are listed in alphabetical order by their Latin names. There is an appendix that has the common names and what the Latin name is for each, but I can't imagine doing that for every single plant-- what a pain! I like to know both Latin and common names, so I was fine with this system. But for someone who's only familiar with the common names of plants, this book is going to be a lot harder to use. (On the bright side, learning the Latin names can be a lot of fun, so if you're at all open to the idea, go for it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Gardening book I reach for again and again..., November 19, 2007
This review is from: The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom: 576 annuals, perennials, and bulbs in full color (Potting-Bench Reference Books) (Paperback)
I have a library of gardening books and this is the book I reach for every time I need info on a plant. It has all the info you need from starting from seed to maintaining your plants. When I wear my copy out, I'll buy another. It is also THE gift to give to new gardeners.

This book is an excellent reference book describing seeds.
Giving the botanical name and common name. Most helpful with information on germination and were the seeds will grow best. And the the section that has thumbnail pictures
is excellent. The ease of using the paperback is all so great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference - Easy to Use, February 1, 2009

This review is from: The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom: 576 annuals, perennials, and bulbs in full color (Potting-Bench Reference Books) (Paperback)
This is an excellent resource! Over 500 pages of information, nearly everything I have looked up, including unusual and hard-to-find perennials and annuals, has been in this book. All plants are listed by their latin name, and Powell has included an easy index at the back of the book to look up the latin names under the common names. It's a really handy volume- each listing includes: brief description w/ page reference for a photograph included near the back of the book; the type of plant (hardy perennial, etc.), zones, flowering season; directions for sowing both indoors and outdoors, germinating time and requirements; transplanting information; care; combination ideas; warnings if the plant is toxic; and my favorite - how to propagate (i.e. by division, cutting, seed collecting, etc.). Also, any "tricks" for germination (like needing to soak seeds ahead of time), are also in the description. For anyone growing from seed, this is an excellent resource - much handier and more complete than many out there.
