Book Description

May 1998
Silk and gold radiate luxury, and embroiderers through the ages valued these materials, and with them reproduced wonderfully flowering embroidered gardens. This revised edition of Thomasina Beck's 1979 classic presents a cornucopia of ideas for those wishing to continue the tradition. Engravings, woodcuts, portraits and a wealth of embroideries, patterns, and pictures illustrate the intriguing parallel between the two arts. Specially commissioned drawings update these sources for contemporary patterns. 160 pages (95 in color), 75 b/w illus., 8 3/4 x 12.

This review is from: Gardening With Silk and Gold: A History of Gardens in Embroidery (Hardcover)
As a gardener and an embroidery fan, I was literally fascinated by this book. I made a learning "leap" concerning the use of embroidered items in the household and the long cold winters in England. I also had a better understanding of the design of gardens and the use of them as out door "rooms" when the weather was mild. Embroidry was not only a pastime, it was necessary if you wanted decorations to cheer up and warm up the old stone castle. This book sent me off on several new projects for my own home.
