Unlike similar titles (e.g., Malcolm Hillier's Container Gardening Through the Year, LJ 3/15/95), Search's new book on the popular topic of container gardening integrates planting designs with site recommendations. Search, a British horticulturist with 15 years' experience, groups her descriptions of container plantings in chapters devoted to alternative gardening spaces, such as walls, stairs, and entrances. Search's designs are well illustrated with color photographs and scale diagrams, and detailed maintenance information is also given. In a laudable departure from many popular U.S. horticultural books, which are not ethnically diverse, Search shows a person of African ancestry preparing a container. This book is fun to read and has wonderfully illustrated how-tos that give you the self-confidence to try your hand at painting pots, or setting up a plant screen, or whatever. Clever ideas are presented as well, such as planting two plants in pots next to each other, where each plant requires very different soil conditions. This way, you can go BEYOND regular gardening by putting plants in containers!! Also of interest are the illustrations showing how the container could change thoughout the year, or be done in different hues. Overall, this is a great book to get you started on your very own garden-less garden!!

I hate to give a less than stellar review but this book had nonew information for me. This is not the book for you if you've readother garden books or consider yourself an experienced gardener. Sometimes I just get one tidbit from a book that's useful, that's fine. This book was a real dud for me. END

Sometimes a book comes along that may be a little less technical but somehow manages to remind you why something is worthwhile. The stunning photographs in this beautiful book have revived my dormant interest in container gardening like an old tulip bulb. This book is a refreshing reminder of the artistry achievable in this most rewarding pursuit. Highly recommended.
