Dream gardens,
By Mrs E G Evans (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gardens in Art 2004 Calendar (Calendar)
dream gardens, 27 October, 2003 Reviewer: Mrs E G Evans from St Peter Port, Guernsey United Kingdom Ilse Godfrey has transformed gardens from California to Austria into a dream world of colour and light. They glow with banks of flowers in neat beds or alleys, with pathways curling round water fountains and lawns that should be easily recognizable. And yet her misty palette gives a ghostly quality to the figures and even to simple objects like a watering can or a garden chair. A rider approaches a castle on a starry night, a child pulls on a lead, or a white-robed lady wanders amidst tall trees of roses. Romance lies in every month and imagination makes this beautifully printed calendar a joy to open and behold. There is something very different about these views which help us to escape from everyday realities into a new world created by Ilse Godfrey for the year 2004. It will surely prove to be a good one! ***

This is a wonderful calendar--each month is beautifully illustrated by a painting depicting a garden, many from world-famous sites. Looking at them you can be transported to another time and place, from the riotous blooms of Holland Garden in London to the peace and serenity of a landscape in California. The paintings are colorful, whimsical, a delight to the eye.
