Editorial Reviews

Review

"To make a garden truly sing, start from the ground up...landscape designer Judy Kameon shows how to make each part of your yard fully and delightfully user-friendly." -Martha Stewart Living

“…Throughout the lavish gardens photographed for this book are handy ideas that could inspire us to carve warm, witty living space out of our own gardens…” –Chicago Tribune

“Landscape designer Judy Kameon’s beautiful book of work, Gardens Are For Living, belies the author’s sixties childhood…It is a verdant tour of lush gardens that toes the line between wildness and urbanity, which has become the designer’s signature trademark…Kameon conveys a sense of place, and a colorful, modern optimism that is never saccharine—or predictable. As the title suggests, Kameon makes (and proves) her case that your outdoor space can be as important as your indoor—brilliantly landscaped outdoor amphitheaters, treehouses, and Secret Garden–like pathways are places for community, artistic expression, entertainment, and, perhaps most importantly, play. And while the photography of her work is obviously transportive, so is her lovely way of telling stories and doling out practical tips for novice gardeners…the warmer days are en route—[and] you best not waste them indoors.” –Vogue.com

"Over the past two decades, Judy Kameon, the founder of the design firm Elysian Landscapes, has created some of Southern California’s most inviting outdoor spaces. She focuses primarily on residential gardens for clients like Sofia Coppola but has also completed some notable commercial commissions, including the grounds of the Parker Palm Springs, a project on which she worked closely with Jonathan Adler, who designed the hotel’s interiors. Kameon’s gardens have a casual, naturalistic feel but are marvels of precise botanical pairing, ingenious layout, and smart furniture and accessory selection." -Architectural Digest

"Landscape designer Judy Kameon's first book, Gardens Are for Living: Design Inspiration for Outdoor Spaces, with a foreword by design maestro Jonathan Adler, is a densely packed, playful, and easy-to-penetrate read. Kameon's generously shared with the world what she's been sharing with her friends and clients for years: how she does it, what her process is, and where she gets her inspiration. There's nothing one dimensional about the way Kameon thinks, lives her life or plans her gardens, which are layered and carefully constructed to make the most out of a space. Consideration is given to comfortable seating, lighting—whether it be from fire pits or Moroccan lanterns hanging from the trees to extend the time in the garden—, and landscaping materials that add interest and define spaces. She thinks the same way an interior designer does, adding accessories that make a "room" feel inviting: a colorful Bauer pot to ignite a table, striped throw cushions, even vintage finds like playful ceramic parrots or Foo Dogs to give the garden character." -Gardenista.com

“Get your Post-its ready for Gardens Are For Living. With imagery ranging from midcentury Slim Aarons to her painted illustrations and client projects, so-very-Californian Elysian Landscapes designer Judy Kameon shows that “being outside is often the better choice.” –C California Style

"Judy Kameon, began her career in landscape design 20 years ago, transforming an empty lot next to her Elysian Park bungalow into an urban oasis. Her firm Elysian Landscapes was born from the project and has since acquired a reputation for creating lush yet comfortable outdoor living spaces. This month marks the release of her book Gardens Are for Living: Design Inspiration for Outdoor Spaces...a gorgeous compilation." -Los Angeles Magazine

"If the idea of actually reading on a lazy spring weekend seems a bit too ambitious and what you really crave is some creative inspiration, unwind your way through Gardens Are for Living: Design Inspiration for Outdoor Spaces, a gorgeous book showcasing outdoor living spaces, with a foreword by design guru Jonathan Adler." -Indulge

“In her sublime new book, Gardens Are For Living, Kameon offers practical advice for creating welcoming gardens and outdoor living areas that maximize your living space.” –Los Angeles Times

“Inspiration Central. Dig into this tome of ideas before creating your outdoor plan this year. It could spark something you never considered.” –San Diego Home Garden

“…Judy Kameon is a wizard at conjuring up California in all its breezy pop and pizazz. Gardens Are For Living made me want to head for the temperate West Coast sunshine. Kameon’s tome is warm, gracious and informative.” –New York Times

“A new book from Los Angles landscape designer Judy Kameon captures the daydream-including gardens she’s created…while offering reams of practical tips for creating—and actually using—beautiful outdoor spaces.” -1stdibs

“Chock full of ideas to jump-start the imagination, Kameon’s book promotes the philosophy that gardens should be spaces for entertaining, gather, and most importantly, relaxation. The book features a valuable resource section and there is something for every garden space and climate.” –Array

I hadn't realized before buying this that the book centered on the California climate. There is a small last chapter that talks about incorporating the ideas into other locales, but it was pretty limited and almost seemed like an added on chapter required by the publisher. So, if you can't have year round barbecues and a pool there really wasn't much to inspire. Also I thought the landscape design was pretty ad hoc and messy looking. It made me think of hippy sixties living. There were a lot of photographs and some of them brought ideas to mind but a lot of them were also close up shots of a chicken, or a vase of flowers. I also thought the script was too poetic and flowery as opposed to actual advice or how-to's. Overall, it was not to my taste and because the landscaping design had such a strong viewpoint, nothing appealed to me. If Amazon didn't charge a re-stocking fee I would return this book.

Judy's gardens are amazing but her tips for any yard are inspirational and practical. As I read the book I had a new appreciation for the outdoor space I had around me. Nothing better than sitting in the garden and reading this book.

There is lifetime of creativity in this book that to date is unmatched in one publication.
Forget the day-to-day reading in magazines & periodicals. Spend a few extra dollars once for this book & you'll never need anything else.
What an amazing & creative mind has Judy Kameon. She has a gift for the unusual which we have found exciting & given us a new perspective on what was previously commonplace.
Love this book.

I have been looking for a good garden design book for a while now and was so excited to receive this book. However, when I began flipping through the pages, I was very disappointed. All of the gardens looked very similar and I felt that the only inspiring picture was on the front cover.

I read a lot of garden books, this one immediately caught my eye: it's a detailed examination of bold modern outdoor spaces with a focus on spaces with concrete structures and other "outdoor furniture" that includes everything from actual furniture to walls and barriers.

Reading this book, one thing kept occurring to me over and over: Do people really live like this?

The spaces are all so impeccably well design, and yet they are UN-lived-in. I'm not saying I don't appreciate the designs in this book, but rather that they're just so stunning and modern as to seem unachievable to me. I wondered, for instance: "When your home has a sunken pool surrounded by beautifully upholstered furniture, what happens to the fabric when it rains?"

And yet, I came away from this book with many new ideas -- so I'm quite fond of this book. Color abounds in this book, for instance, as do artsy solutions to en-livening outdoor spaces. Thinking of this book as an idea book is liberating, as it's full of creative uses of the outdoors.

It's Just Okay... Barely!
If you like to look at pretty gardening pictures, then it's an okay coffee table book. My issue with the book was that it concentrated its concepts on what could be achieved on the west coast, or in more temperate areas. I didn't see a lot that could be actually used on the east coast, where our winters are very cold. The weather affects planting and building materials. For instance, there's a picture of a beautiful fence built using Plexiglass panels, but Plexi or Lexan is definitely not recommended in our state unless you want to frequently replace the panels. A beautiful idea, but not universally practical. There is a page that lists points on "extending the season", but it doesn't offer any information that cold weather gardeners aren't already aware of and even some of that information isn't practical. Hmmmm! Looks great, but I would recommend a library loan and a quick flip through over a $30+ purchase. Just my opinion!

BEAUTIFUL BOOK WITH LOTS OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF JUDY KAMEON'S LANDSCAPE DESIGN WORK. I HAVE ADMIRED HER WORK FOR YEARS IN MAGAZINES AND OTHER BOOKS SO I WAS HAPPY THAT SHE HAS A BOOK THAT CONCENTRATES ON HER WORK ALONE. I FOUND IT ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN SELECTING PLANTS FOR A LOW-WATER HILLY SITE IN LOS ANGLES THAT I DESIGNED FOR MY SON.
