Book Description

April 1995
This beautiful volume traces the history of the gardens in and around Naples from the times of the Romans to the present. Following an authoritative introduction by the garden expert Elizabeth Blair MacDougal, the individual gardens unfold in a lavish series of photographs. The tour begins with the magnificent Royal Gardens at Caserta, and continues with visits to other public and private gardens in and around the city of Naples. Gardens from Capri, both ancient and modern, are also covered, as are those of the nearby island of Ischia. The reader then travels south along the Miglio d'Oro, past the slopes of Mount Vesuvius where the great Neapolitan villas once lay. A trip through the historically rich Campania region, including the gardens of Sorrento, the terraced gardens of Positano, and the Roman ruins at Paestum conclude the book. The most visually rich work yet published on the subject, The Gardens of Naples will be welcomed by garden lovers as well as by anyone with an appreciation for the unrivaled beauties of the Italian countryside.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This beautiful book surveys the gardens of Naples from Greek and Roman times to the present. Thirty-four gardens (more private than public) are included. The author is a landscape architect, historian, and scholar who chose not to include references or a bibliography, as did Georgina Masson in Italian Gardens (Antique Collectors Club, 1987. o.p.). Thus, this is more of a photographic survey that can supplement the work above. Photographer Sapieha has also done Gardens of Portugal (Scala Bks., 1989) and Gardens of Mexico (LJ 2/1/94) in the same style. A nice addition to large landscape architecture and travel collections.?Laura Lipton, Miller Horticulture Lib., Seattle

5.0 out of 5 stars CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!, May 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Gardens of Naples (Hardcover)
Open this book and you'll enter a world of sun-kissed villas, exotic foliage, colorful orchards, shadowed walkways, and incredible views overlooking the water. The photography simply took my breath away! I must have looked through the book a half a dozen times before I even began to read the text. If you're planning to visit the area let this serve as an inspiration from the usual tourist traps. I've been to Naples several times but this visually stunning tome made me realize just how much I've missed. Can't wait to go back and explore those gorgeous gardens! This book is definitely a keeper!

Reading and collecting garden books has become a hobby of mine, and this is by far the best of my collection. The landscapes in this book have been refined over centuries, by both man and nature. I look at this book repeatedly, for enjoyment and for ideas in sketching landscape designs
