Book Description

October 1, 2005
Britain’s National Trust has the finest collection of gardens ever assembled under one ownership—the greatest in number, diversity, historic importance, and quality. Together, they form the world’s most important collection of cultivated plants, distinguished by their beauty, rarity, historical interest, and scientific value. This new edition of Gardens of the National Trust has been substantially revised to showcase superb new photography and to introduce newly acquired properties. Historically and horticulturally, a vivid picture of the gardens is painted, with all the major periods represented. Both a practical guide and a rich source of inspiration, the book includes horticultural details, a complete plant list, and a section on the many other Trust gardens to visit. Throughout, splendid color images by the country’s leading photographers bring to life the beauty of each garden.

4.0 out of 5 stars good informative guide August 4, 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is a good book to read before your trip & decide where to go, much too big to travel with. Well written, informative, but could use a few more photos-these are gardens after all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes me ache to go there! December 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This large and attractive book gives the reader a tour of a number of the best gardens held by the National Trust. The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty is a British (except Scotland, which has its own National Trust) organization that preserves especially interesting sites. Each site in this book begins with a quick list of specifics, including name, location, area, soil, altitude, average rainfall, average winter climate and staff. After that comes a very interesting written description of the site and its gardens, and one or two large and very well taken picture.

Overall, I found this book to be a pretty interesting read. The sites sound lovely, and it make me ache to go there! I do wish that they could have included more pictures, but I guess that that is the trouble with covering so many sites - if you didn't limit the number of pictures the book would be huge and terribly expensive. Personally, I think it's a great book, and I am glad to have it!
