The author takes us on a tour of gardens from a number of different cultures. He describes and explains the importance of color, values, beliefs, and spiritual factors in the design of gardens and in the selection of plants, colors and other factors. The book is loaded with interesting facts and insights. The photos are beautiful. It is book to be enjoyed one page at a time and well worth picking up many times to flip through the pages. Only fault is that the pages are packed with information and the relatively small size of the book results in a small font....so you'll need your reading glasses. Enjoy!!

This is one of my favorite gardening books. It features so many beauiful, peaceful gardens, from Eastern styles like Taoist Gardens and Zen Gardens to Western styles like English Knot Gardens and Italian Renaissance Gardens. All these categories are not explored exhaustively; rather, the history and characteristics of each are briefly addressed, accompanied by gorgeous photos of famous representative gardens. Each section ends with a simple garden plan in the style described. The last section deals with the Healing Garden, and bonus features throughout on topics such as Feng Shui and the Language of Flowers are sure to delight. There wasn't a garden in this book that I didn't want to create myself, and the plans made me think I could! This volume, though not large, packs a lot of value in 140 pages. It is an incredible bargain at the price.
