This richly illustrated volume explores the trendsetting gardens of seven key periods in garden history: from the picturesque and rustic style of Regency gardens, through the ostentatious bedding displays and exotic plant collections of the Victorians, up to the 20th century’s “outdoor rooms.” It also places in context the seven gardens created at the RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Yorkshire— small–scale interpretations of the period gardens that were in vogue in each era. The final chapter looks at Diarmuid Gavin’s design for the contemporary garden of the group, bringing garden history and design right up to date.
