Versailles is as famous for Le Norte's gardens are they are for Mansarts palace to end all palaces. This is very good book on these beautiful gardens, the images jump off the page and the text is highly informative. Louis XIV, spent so much time ruminating over these gardens with his great landscape architect Le Notre, that he himself wrote a guide to the gardens, it has been said that Louis was always more pleased with the gardens than he ever was with the palace. Though the gardens of Versailles are spectacular, if you ever visit the Ile of France, be sure to see Le Notre's masterwork at Vieux le Vicomte, now that's perfection personified..it was so spectacular that the King had the owner Fouquet imprisoned, his property confiscated, and had Le Notre leave Vieux le Vicomte and start work immediately on his palace at Versailles, even today Vieux le Vicomte is unfinished.
