Biography

In the year of the saxophone, Santa Barbara's Gardens & Villa give us the flute. And along the way, G&V effectively wipe clear the vaseline from the murky bedroom funk of recent days. G&V bang out instant classics -- each crystal clear and immaculate, but no less sweeping or languid. Their debut is a youthful exploration of just how opulent and pop starkness can go. It also ... Editorial Reviews

Gardens & Villa channel all the taut pop precisions of 90s Britpop of bands like Blur (borrowed from the 60s anyhow), and send it through an 80s synth filter both undeniably coastal and modern. It's Spoon's Kill The Moonlight lost in a daydream, but with that same hungry energy. Gardens & Villa may simultaneously pull from Gary Numan, The Kinks and odder prog within one composition. And like a fine sweet tea, it's made just that right kind of sugary though even the most upbeat tunes have an undercurrent of the bittersweet and the lost at heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laid Back "Coco Vibes" July 7, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
Santa Barbara alt-rockers Gardens & Villa seem to draw inspiration from an eclectic variety of musicians on their self titled debut. I can hear the influence of The Talking Heads, Husky Rescue, Coldplay, Gary Numan, Prince and The Beatles; as well as other currently popular Indie rock bands. The result is an album that exudes variety and doesn't get stale with repeat listens, but one that lacks a unifying sound. This is somewhat offset by Lynch's unmistakable Gardens & Villa vocal style. And there is also the flute...

The two songs (Black Hills & Orange Blossom) currently being offered as free tracks are among the strongest cuts from the album, although there are a few other gems. The rest of the songs decent if not overly memorable. There were really only two disappointments. I found 'Spacetime' with its narrator repetition of the title a bit annoying, and 'Chemtrails' is rather forgettable.

All in all, Gardens & Villa is a rewarding listen, though some of the tracks do not live up to the promise of the better ones. However, I hear their live performances are great, and I am looking forward to their sophomore effort. Be sure to check out the collection of photo on their blog and their videos to get a more visual feel for the band. I would place Gardens & Villa's first album somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. They continue to grow on me so I'll go with 4 stars for this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 thumps up :) April 11, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
This album has been in my heavy rotation for the past year. It's electro-pop-synth-bass heavy tunes combined with amazing vocals make it one of my favorites to listen to. I also just saw these guys live for the first time and it 20x better than the album, which is pretty rare these days. Go ahead and buy this, you won't be dissappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it March 31, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I spent more than twice as much on this album than what Amazon is selling it for, and it was well worth it. Getting it for $5 is a steal. If you're into bands like Death Cab, Coldplay, Bon Iver, then this cd will fit well into your collection. Very cool sound. Perfect background music for studying or writing.
