One of the 20th century's great experimental novelist's, this Virginia Woolf collection shows us finding her way into her ultimate lyrical style, themes, and voice. Two of the novels included here, "Night and Day" and "The Voyage Out," are terribly outdated, written in the plotting and general style of their day (the mid 19-teens), but even these have glimpses of what would become her final voice. The third novel, "Jacob's Room," from the early 1920s, is a vast move into modernist fiction and is a moving recounting of a young man's leap from the lower classes to Cambridge and his drafting into WWI. Its closing is as moving and astringent now as when it was written. The other pieces reflect her growth as a modernist and into that voice that would ultimately give us "Mrs. Dalloway," "To the Lighthouse," "The Waves," "A Room of One's Own,(nonfiction), "Orlando," and "Between the Acts." She also wrote two astute and amusing books of criticism ("The Common Readers") and her million-plus word diary, which in time may come to be seen as her crowning achievement. We also have her letters, her short fiction, Roger Fry's biography, and more. Hers was a beautiful mind deeply haunted by bouts of depression and insanity.
