I like having bird seed on the ground, but not "ON" the ground. The legs raise up the food so it never rots and ferments, like other feeders. The doves that visit my yard especially love it since they feed on the ground and don't fly up to the hanging feeders.

I was pleased to find this tray feeder that sits several inches off the ground at this price. I was even more pleased when it arrived and I saw the quality of the feeder.

The feeder frame is made of solid wood. It has a heavy duty green screen bottom. The mesh of the screen is a little larger than others I have had, but not so large that any of the seed falls through. Rain water drains through better than finer screen, so the seed dries quickly without forming mold. If the rain is more than an afternoon shower I dump the seed to be certain of avoiding any problems.

Wood strips on the bottom cover where the screen is attached so there are no exposed edges. The top frame, the most likely area for a feeder to come apart, has been put together with screws as well as staples. I don't know carpentry terms, but the legs aren't just stuck on the bottom. The wood strips on the bottom are cut so that the legs nestle in between them and the frame, so that each leg is attached to four pieces of wood. The result is that it seems more substantial and stable than many feeders.

And the birds love it. There are often a half dozen or more birds on it at one time.

The birds and squirrels love this feeder. It sure beats pouring seed on the ground. The wooden structure is well built, but the screen is nylon and the attachment of the screen to the wood is poor. Within 2 weeks, the screen is torn loose from the frame. I will have to rebuild both of the feeders I bought by putting in new screen and figuring out a better attachment method.

Decent construction for the price. It held up well until some raccoons sat on it and pulled out the screen on two sides. It might have held up better if the screen was attached with staples every few inches, which is what I did when I repaired it (It uses a strip of wood with 3 or 4 staples per side to hold the screen in place.)

One of the legs became loose. A bit of glue fixed that.

It's a good size to catch the seeds dropped from a hanging feeder above and accommodates several birds.

A covered feeder would be better in the winter time, but the down side is that it wouldn't catch the seeds that birds often drop from a hanging feeder above.

The wood is unfinished. Books recommend not finishing the wood adjacent to where the seed is held, but that makes the wood more susceptible to staining. I put a coat of water-based polyurethane on it.

I bought this as a feeder for the mourning doves that frequent my garden. It only took them less than a week to figure out that it was for them. It's used by the sparrows and bluejays in my yard also. It has worked out so well that I am actually going to purchase 3 or 4 more. The only issue I have is that I do wish it was a tad bigger -- by about 4 inches longer and 4 inches wider. The birds are rather territorial, and do not like eating too close to one another. But, all in all, as a bird-lover I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves feeding and watching birds. Also, in case you were concerned, the mesh screen on this is the perfect size for making sure the bird seed does not fall through.

I have a lot of bird feeders hanging but this one I put on my deck for a little more protection for the birds. It's very simple and a bit messy, but birds are messy! It's very sturdy and would definitely buy another one!

THE BIRDS AND SQUIRRELS LOVE IT - THEY ARE VERY HAPPY, AND SO AM I AS THE SQUIRRELS ARE LEAVING THE BIRD FEEDERS ALONE, AND MY DOG ISN'T EATING THE NUTS, ETC FROM THE GROUND!
