4.0 out of 5 stars Every Pro or Handyman should have one...
I've been an electrician for 34 years. "Touchless testers" have been around for some time and I've found them essential in troubleshooting and for personal safety. I've bought about every touchless tester ever made and this is the best. There have been inferior versions by Greenlee and others costing up to $70.00.

2.0 out of 5 stars battery cover/pocket clip fell off
This tester works fairly well, but soon after I bought it the pocket clip fell off. It is also the battery cover. Now I have it taped on with electrical tape. Also, the first time I used it I forgot to turn it off and ran down the batteries. They are hearing aid style batteries and were a little expensive to replace. It does detect current.

I've bought about every touchless tester ever made and this is the best. There have been inferior versions by Greenlee and others costing up to $70.00.

This one is supersensitive (make sure you adjust the sensitivity downward on a known "hot-wire before using and then turn up a tad, otherwise you'll get false positive indications). This instrument is audible and visual as well. Highly reccommended and inexpensive. The only reason for four stars is that the unit is not "ultra-grade" in build quality, but that's OK given the price.

A quick and effective way to check for voltage. Not sensitive enough for automotive 12 volt systems unfortunately.

2.0 out of 5 stars Had to return it..., October 11, 2007
This review is from: Gardner Bender GVD-505A Non-Contact Voltage Tester with Pocket Clip (Tools & Home Improvement)
It works great to detect wires behind sheetrock or live wires but it broke easily and the batteries die quite fast... I had to return it to Lowes after using it only 3 times... Pretty dissapointed...

if anything this great tool is too sensitive when turned up. I won't do electrical work without it. you won't regret this purchase.

I have several other non contact AC voltage testers but none of them are sensitive enough to find active wires or circuits behind walls. Most make you almost have to touch the live wire or circuit which in my opinion makes them not so handy. I like the adjustable feature to be able to fine tune it for your application. This is absolutely the best that I have used so far to date. Would recommend this to my friends for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good tool!, December 5, 2008
This review is from: Gardner Bender GVD-505A Non-Contact Voltage Tester with Pocket Clip (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had this tester for two years its performance has been flawless. Set it on super sensitive mode and you can trace live wires behind walls, very handy for re-models. Great tool!
