Birds Don't Like It,
By Nina "nal001" (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gardner Equipment Thistle Sak Finch Feeder [Misc.] (Misc.)
I've had this sock for about six months now. The birds seem to have a very difficult time getting seeds out of it. (I'm using thistle seeds.) If I shake the sock soundly, I can feel some seeds creeping out of the tiny holes. And, the birds will come by and take those seeds. But, they don't work at getting the seeds, and it's rare that it attracts any birds. There are MANY birds in my rural yard, including lots of finches. But, they don't use this feeder. I had much better luck with the pre-filled thistle socks I used to purchase.

We've been using these feeders with great success for a year and a half. I'd give them five stars but for the fact that competing feeders with larger seed holes are even more popular with our local finches. It's a trade-off: the other feeders waste more seed, make a bigger mess, and attract other birds than just finches. Birds are like people - they'll always choose the easiest route to a free lunch, and bigger seed holes take a little less effort. We'll stick with the GH Thistle Sak, thanks. I submitted a photo to Amazon last year, and those birds in the picture are real, and real happy with our choice. I found the "they'd rather starve" review baffling, I must admit!

I bought three because I couldn't find my super-duper nylon thistle socks. Within 24 hours, House Finches had opened holes in the socks, then the Scrub Jays pecked them until the holes were even bigger. The crowning blow was a chipmunk that chewed large holes so all the expensive nyger thistle poured out on the ground. You get what you pay for with these socks: not much.

I got this product in the mail today filled them up and about 1 hour later had 5 finch birds feeding off of them. These feeders seemed to be doing a great job for my finches. I am very happy with the product. Probably will order more at a later date. I would strongly advise this feeder to anyone. I love them, thanks kimberly hill
