2.0 out of 5 stars Finches are "cautious"......, August 6, 2010
By

This review is from: Gardner/Homestead 3710 Thistle Sak Finch Feeder
I purchased this item, from a Wild Birds Unlimited retail store. And i must say, in my 25yrs of avian experience including backyard bird feeding, i found my finches to be quite "cautious", in using this thistle sock. And of course i now know why, because i "experimented" with a plain white colored thistle sock, and then this one, which obviously has the floral print to it. It could be just be my finches folks, but my birds preferred the plain white sock, to the printed one. This doesn't surprise me, as the same can be said about bird baths. The ones you see that are sold, with the blue colored basins, are a HUGE turn-off to most birds. Where as a "normal" plain colored concrete or plastic bath, is preferred more so. In closing, it could just be my particular birds being "cautious". However, i would suggest the plain colored white socks, over these printed ones. In theory, they may look "pretty", but unfortunately they are to scary for our little feathered friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better Finch Feeder!, December 5, 2008
By

This review is from: Gardner/Homestead 3710 Thistle Sak Finch Feeder
I bought this after trying the Kaytee finch station for months and noticed how much nyjer was wasted on the ground. This thistle sak has smaller mesh and provides a much better balance of access for finches while wasting less seed. Its well worth the minimal cost. Sometimes a dozen finches will be eating at once. Recommended!!!

Latest update July, 2010: The squirrels in our neighborhood have torn it up after well timed leaps to get at it. I guess I need armored vehicles for my finch feeding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bottom seam a problem, April 2, 2009

This review is from: Gardner/Homestead 3710 Thistle Sak Finch Feeder
I received the Thistle sock in about a week and it was much bigger than I expected. I filled the sock and left for two days. When I returned the seed was on the ground having leaked out from two shredded holes on the corners at the bottom seam. I sewed the seam again and repaired the bottom. Might be a good idea to reinforce the bottom seam before you put it outside. I filled the sock half full and put it out again Seems to be working. There is also a lot more seed on the ground than the last smaller sock, but the ground feeders take care of that. Perhaps next time I'll consider a more sturdy tube feeder. It's a great winter Finch and Pine Siskin food source and always has birds feeding on it during and after our Colorado snowstorms.
