Editorial Reviews

Review

"I love the addition of the scales -- very helpful. I like the way that Gardner walks students through a visual analysis after first elaborating on the historical context. I think this is the textbook's greatest strength."

"One of the most outstanding differences [between Gardner's and other art history texts] is the accessibility of the text. The text . . . is very streamlined. It simplifies the material . . . and the organization is more logical."

Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. I ordered this book as an e-book that is a rental for 60 days. It was supposed to come with a temporary access code for Cengage Brain so I can have access to the study guide and some other tools. I have not received my access code and the Cengage site is asking me to pay for the e-book and get the access code for the price that is lower than amazon. I don't think I should have to pay again just to get the access code.

it's okay. the pages are crisp. the illustrations are stylish. I'm digging it, but the price is a rip off. whoever made this book is cruel and hates students.

Though I purchased the paperback and not the hardbound edition for my art history class, I am not disappointed. The pictures and the binding are great, and the text is straightforward. Family members not taking the art history class have enjoyed reading it, as well. This was the required text for my class, but if you were just interested in the subject, this is an awesome book.

I got this for my University's Art History Book. It's really well organized so that I can look at the images on my professor's slides, find them in the book and learn all of the information- i.e date, art period, medium. I would't recommend this to someone looking for leisurely reading, but it is practical academically.

Did not come with the "CourseMate Printed Access Card".. This was the main reason we decided to rent from Amazon instead of thru the school. Now we have to pay and additional rental fee to the school to get the access card we need.
