Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Mischief's on the menu and trouble's brewin' in this brand new concoction of comics. Share in the shenanigans, as GARFIELD, the furry prankster, engages in a little "tomcatfoolery" that's sure to elicit some catty laughter.

Although I am close to thirty years old, Garfield the cat is one of my favorite childhood characters. I don't know if it was his love for lasagna or his sarcastic wit that attracted me to the fat cat but after all these years, I am still a huge Garfield fan. It has been over a year since his last book. I have been anticipating this book for some time now. Of course I was not let down. Garfield can never let me down with his lazy, selfish, and often abusive nature. Odie is still the dumbest animated dog there is, and Jon remains to be the dorkiest cat owner to walk the face of the earth. My favorite moments in the book definitely involves spiders and Garfield finding ways to squish them. Then there is Jon trying to get a date but ends up getting shot down by most women he encounters in person or over the phone. I wish Jim Davis would bring back Nermal the world's cutest kitten so I can see Garfield mail him to Abu Dhabi. Oh well, seeing Garfield squish spiders is good enough for me. If there is one thing I really appreciate from Jim Davis is that his cartoons never involves politics or social issues. Everything that is funny is at the expense of Jon, Odie, and spiders. I will never grow out of my Garfield obsession. I am a fan for life.

Being a big Garfield fan, I enjoyed this book. It is a wonderful, entertaining book (although you should first read Garfield Beefs Up, #37, and Garfield Gets Cookin', #38, before you read this book.) But I recommend this book to anybody, Garfield fan or not. Great art, and heartwarming fat cat, Garfield, is back again!

As an owner of all 39 Garfield books, I feel Garfield Eats Crow is an average collection of Garfield strips. I say this because most of the strips deal mainly with the characters of Garfield and Jon, though Odie, Irma, and Jon's family appear occasionally in this particular book. The artwork is superb as usual, and the jokes are above average (and about 90 percent original). (and just a note: the strips in this book were actually published in newspapers between November 5, 2000 and June 2, 2001.) This is the third book in the Garfield collection that has been printed in color. I find the colorization of the 3-panel weekday strips to be just a tiny bit distracting, though it is nice to see the Sunday strips in here printed with color. If you already like Garfield, this collection will be a fun read. If you are not familiar with Garfield, this collection of strips (Garfield's 39th) is a good of place as any to start reading and falling in love with one of the coolest comical cartoon cats around.

The world would be a better place if we learned a few lessons from a cartoon cat. All Garfield books are worth having and re-reading again and again for laughs. One of the genuine FUNNY characters that has been created without catering too much to the politically correct brigade.
Keep up the great work Mr Davis and thanks for giving us something to laugh at.

The title here should have been the first sentence! I was amazed by how much the first strip was like an opening joke. If Garfield keeps on going like this, it could get more popular than "Peanuts" was.
