A great macro-mini, but not for everyone,
By
This review is from: Gargantuan Black Dragon (Dungeons & Dragons Icons) (Misc.)
First, the obvious. This miniature - though it seems silly to call it that - looks splendid. It stands about 7 inches tall, and has a wingspan of about 9 inches (both rough estimates). The level of detail is excellent - the scalework is finely done, the horns are appropriately wicked looking, and even the plating down the back and the barbed tail looks nasty. This mini is definitely a centerpiece.
In addition to the miniature itself, you get an oversized (3x5) miniature stat card. The black dragon points at an even 500 pts., so its an excellent foe for large warband battles. Also, a poster map of an underground grotto is also included for miniatures combat (or RPG use, of course). Finally, there is a sheet with scenarios, special rules, etc. So why only 4 stars? This beastie is so powerful that gamemasters will probably only use it in an RPG game once per campaign. After that, its going to be a (spectacular) shelf decoration. The retail price tag of $29.99 is a little steep for such a limited use item (to say nothing of the Colossal Red Dragon at $74.99). Another minor drawback of this mini is that it is placed on a square base, unlike all the other miniatures from the D&D minis line. Therefore, if you're using the dragon on a grid, you have to align it along only one of four directions. I would prefer if the mini had a round base so I could orient it in any direction on the battle grid. For those that play the minis game, it will see use as an iconic warband opponent. I'd guess that there will be a lot of tourneys and game-store events involving dragon-slaying over the next few months. But this will also pass once other dragons in the line arrive, and the players want to fight the next dragon. Still, its a splendid piece.

Can you really call it a "mini"?,
By
This review is from: Gargantuan Black Dragon (Dungeons & Dragons Icons) (Misc.)
No matter what your reason for taking a look at this piece, you're going to be happy. The photos you see here just don't seem to do it justice, as I found when I stood holding it in my grubby hand. Whether your a dragon collector, into RPG, or simply a DDM skirmisher, this is a must have.
Really, though, can you call something that big a mini? Who cares! put in a shelf, place it in front of your gaming group, or crush your buddy's 500pt army. DO IT NOW!

The Magnificent Wyrm!,

This figure is just brilliant; I was silly and bought him for 29.99 at my local comic book shop, but even at that price I found him worth it!
The detail is just amazing, and though I'm currently just using it as a nice piece on my night stand, I imagine it'll serve great purpose in my miniatures games; primarily, it's a display piece, but a very nice one for the price!

Awesome "miniature",

Wished I would have ordered this from Amazon (I paid full price at my hobby store) but this item is well worth it. Even if you never intend to play but love a high quality dragon to display--this is awesome. If you play, the stats on this bad boy will make you gasp and wonder "How can we defeat this?". Great to use for RPG or just in the minis game; but be warned--a very powerful dragon! These miniatures are beautiful works of art to boot!

The Great Wyrm!,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I thought I might like this miniature but I had no idea how cool it would be until I opened the box and set it out on my dining room table. He's huge, detailed, and mean looking. So taken was I that I sat down and wrote up a whole biography and stat sheet for him. Even though my stat sheet came out to about a CR of 24, I'll probably put him in as a dare mob in my current campaign.
The figure also comes with a rule variant that lets you play with one player as the black dragon and another with a 500 point warband. For both standard D&D players and D&D Mini players, the black dragon is well worth the $20. I highly recommend it.

Great Mini that isn't so mini!,

This is a great mini for any collector or actual D&D player! The black dragon is very well done and the painting of the mini is spot on. If you got a Great Wyrm Black Dragon waiting to ambush players, I suggest you get this mini and show them what the dragon's fear aura can really do!

Intimidating miniature,

If you need a giant, intimidating, super-detailed dragon mini for any game, this is a great item to pick up. It is made to sit on a game mat so it has a base to keep it very stable. The mini looks great - very well-done. The only problem is that it is squatting. In a movie or one's imagination, rarely does the big bad dragon squat! Of course, if it was in any other position, it wouldn't fit in a managable box.
Overall, a worthwhile purchase!

There be Dragons Here,

The detail and design of this Icon of Dungeons and Dragons is an amazing addition to any one's collection. Although not as expensive as the Colossal Red Dragon, the Black is still a bit pricey if its only intended use is for use in your game either as a miniature or as an encounter in your table top game. But if you are buying it for gaming AND as a display item, it is undeniably a must have. I own all of the currently available 'Icons' and I am looking forward to more in the series.

Not as Good as the Blue or Red,
This review is from: Gargantuan Black Dragon (Dungeons & Dragons Icons) (Misc.)
This ones models mold lines are probably the most noticeable and most defined. All the D&D minis have bad mold lines but this one has them right on the wings and because of its pose they are shown off.
Overall its still worth a buy if you can get it for a good price, the paint job and detail on it are amazing! The scales and especially the highlights give it a very 3d feel like its come at you.

Pictures not do it justice,

As others have said, the pictures of this "mini" cannot really do it justice. Originally I thought the stance was somewhat odd but in person it looks much better. The quality of the paint job, texture of the mini, and sheer detail on this figure is wonderful.
