Before Peggy Flores demonstrates how to create gargoyles from clay, Ms. Flores talks about the history of gargoyles, chimeras, and grotesque characters. Photographs of actual historical gargoyles are displayed in the video. Ms Flores then shows the tools she will use, what slabs and blocks of clay look like, how they are manipulated, and how to attach and bond unusual features to the head and body. After the gargoyles are sculpted imprinted or otherwise decorated with clay they are fired. This DVD is fascinating for students to observe and learn how to make these grotesque creatures which were used primarily to deflect rainwater from a roof gutter and throw it clear of a building.
