5.0 out of 5 stars Gargoyles and Medieval Monsters
Dozens of mythical animals rendered by artists such as Dürer and da Vinci appear in this remarkable collection. Black-and-white illustrations include 45 finely detailed, skillfully adapted images of dragons, winged dogs, demons, lions, griffins, a bull, unicorn, eagle, and various other grotesques from The Book of Kells, medieval architecture, other sources.

3.0 out of 5 stars The creatures are not interacting
While the drawings are well rendered, I was somewhat disappointed--as I had expected these creatures to be depicted as involved in some kind of scene where they're doing something. Instead, each creature is simply there on the page with no background or foreground--generally by itself--doing nothing more than perhaps roaring. Information is given as to where the original...

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Gargoyles and Medieval Monsters Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Books) (Paperback)
This is a good coloring book for any age, it has a lot of detail so it works with pencils, crayons, and I use paints with it. Plus it is good for males, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Pictures are taken from Real Objects, February 26, 2005
This review is from: Gargoyles and Medieval Monsters Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Books) (Paperback)
I love gargoyles, and thought this coloring book would be great to trace for making stained glass pictures.
When I received the book, there is a word or two at the bottom of each picture telling where the creature came from...a large Church in France, the Book of Kells, etc.

Not only do you enjoy coloring the pages, you learn a little history too.

While the drawings are well rendered, I was somewhat disappointed--as I had expected these creatures to be depicted as involved in some kind of scene where they're doing something. Instead, each creature is simply there on the page with no background or foreground--generally by itself--doing nothing more than perhaps roaring. Information is given as to where the original artwork can be located, such as a cathedral or castle entrance.

I had expected the creatures to be fighting each other, battling a knight, flying over a castle and doing other exciting things.

I think these could be colored by a person of any age-- they are large and well drawn and a child who has a great interest in gargoyles and dragons would probably like this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Coloring Book, June 11, 2000

This review is from: Gargoyles and Medieval Monsters Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Books) (Paperback)
if u r looking for a good ref book on monsters, this isn't what u want. this is a COLORING BOOK. Unless u have a braty little kid who insists on coloring pictures of this sort of thing, i wouldn't buy it. Even though it says all ages, i wouldn't get it for anyone older than three. The books don't really have enough detail.
