4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, November 16, 2000
This review is from: Gargoyle's Quest (Game Cartridge)
Gargoyle's Quest is a good game. You start in the being level but after you beat the first monster you walk around to find new places to go. While your there you talk to people and get advace and get items and learn abiltes from othere people. You fly alittle bit but after a while you get longer time flying and also can save. To get to your file you have to remenber your password. Best thing to do is to write it all down.

I had this game when I was tweleve or so. I must've been stupid because I was never abel to make it past the tower... I got it in the mail two days ago and I've been going through it. Still a challenging game. Still a lot of fun when you've got some time to kill. Having to wait for the extra slow text to scroll is annoying though.

5.0 out of 5 stars An underrated classic..., March 28, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gargoyle's Quest (Game Cartridge)
This game is truly underappreciated. Of course, the game shows its age like any other that's 20 years old, but compared to others of its time its top notch. The graphics and enemies are great and the music is phenomenal.

You are Firebrand, a gargoyle from the ghoul realm. Your home is threatened by an enemy named the "destroyers" and you set out on a quest to find the fire of legend that can stop them. The game does a good job of mixing classic RPG elements with platforming. Moving from one area/town to the next takes place via classic RPG overhead map exploration. There is a menu function that allows you to talk with NPCs when you're in a town and a search function for finding hidden items. You will run into invisible enemy encounters when exploring the map just like other RPGs but the battles fall into the platforming side, as does all the action and boss battles. The platforming is pretty standard; run and jump, shoot enemies with projectiles from your mouth. Being a gargoyle, you also have wings to fly and claws that allow you to wall jump which makes for some interesting exploration. At the start of the game you can only fly for a short amount of time and this is implemented into the game well; allowing you to search for hidden items and others that appear just out of reach. Along the way you will obtain items that allow you to jump higher and fly longer as well as new projectile powers. Not a lot of replay value here, and if you know the ins and outs of the game you can beat it in about an hour. That's not surprising; especially for an early generation gameboy game. Don't let that discourage you though; a first time player will take much longer to get through the game.

If you enjoy the classic games of yesteryear then you should definitely give this one a chance. Otherwise this game won't likely hold your attention compared to the evolved gameplay of this generation.
