The cohesion between Red Garland and Paul Chambers and Art Taylor is like the strength of a wood joint that is pressure clamped with Gorilla glue. These three guys will simply not come apart. Yet each is a virtuoso in his own right.
And then there's their music.
This album should be required in any collection.

Wow.

Classy as classy gets.
There is a lightness and crispness to the soloing that is rare.

Great songs selections! By far one of my favorite all time trio albums.

I love jazz, especially the minimalist type. Red Garland plays as little as possible but has a unique and beautiful sound. He also gives a lot of space to dream. Very enjoyable!

This is one of my favorite Red Garland albums. Indeed, this is the one that introduced me to his playing as well as to one of my drumming inspirations ( Art Taylor).

Since I am a fan, with all of the bias that entails, I am going to refrain from gushing superlatives and invite you to listen to the sound samples. For one thing my own reasons for loving Garland's work is subjective. For another there is nothing I could possibly write that would convey more about this album than a few seconds of each track that the samples provide.

I will say that as a musician I learned a lot from this album and the others that feature Garland with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor. Those three play almost telepathically, and the way Chambers and Taylor lock in and support Garland is a lesson in music in itself.

The album was recorded in a single session for Prestige at Rudy van Gelder's Hackensack, NJ studio on August 17, 1956. This one is - to me - one of Garland's better trio albums. If you are interested in completely immersing yourself in his trio work I recommend that you check out The Ultimate Jazz Collection, which contains almost five hours of Garland, Chambers and Taylor.

A jazz lover for years now, I have often listened to good or very good records which I can honestly do without, though. But this one is absolutely fantastic and should be bought by every music lover interested in jazz music played on the piano.
