Best DIY Reference Clock,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gps 18 Oem (Electronics)
I have 4 Garmin 18 LVC 5M units I currently use as reference clocks. If a GPS unit has three locks on satellites it can tell the time to within 1 millionth of a second. The Garmin 18 LVC 5M, the greatest value in reference clocks, with compareable accuracy costing $5,000.00+. These units are supreme precision time pieces when hooked to a linux box through the serial port. A complete howto is on the ntp support mail system in late 2006. Garmin provides complete documentation on their website, in the OEM section. The unit ships from the factory with the Pulse Per Second signal off, and needs to have a clear view of the sky. I get between 0 us and 50 us accuracy, depending on server traffic. This is a bare wire unit, and requires soldering to operate it.
