great gps, mediocre radio,
This review is from: Garmin Rino 520HCx 14-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio and GPS Receiver (Electronics)
The CX version is the more sensitive GPS receiver from the old one.
Excellent sensitivity. Unlike old one, works indoors in wood structures. Weather/rain proof. Great maps/database features. Unique in that two or more RINO's can display each others' location on map. Lots of accessories. The Bad: Mediocre to poor radio compared to Motorola or other full power GMRS. Shorter range, less sensitive receiver. Menu driven access to EITHER volume or squelch but not both at same time is tedious. No external antenna connection for GMRS.

I am enjoying my Rhino 520 very much. The radio is much better than the lower power models. The color screen is much easier to read than the black and white models I have used. Downloading Topo maps is time consuming but worth the effort. I am very disappointed the gps does not work with Apple computers. I spent a hour at the Apple store with an expert trying to get the gps to work with my IMac and was unsuccessful. Overall however I am very happy with my Rhino.

This unit does everything you need. It is very good on battery life. The only thing I don't like is the center button is too small and sensitive making it hard to push it down without moving the cursor of the intended target.

crappy offline maps cost $129 per region in addition to the cost of the unit? Insane. I'm going back to my cell phone.
That aside, great rugged design, decent options. My cell can do everything this unit can + 1000x more, but cannot be dropped in the water.. i think I'll take the chance with my cell phone, but a good unit if this was about 5 years ago. Garmin needs to catch up with the times because this wont fly any longer. No maps on a mapping unit, you must pay extra. It may not be a surprise for normal Garmin users, but no maps with a mapping device is just beyond silly.

14 miles is over exagerated , unless you're in outerspace??. range is more like 4-5 miles which is twice as far as 120 model. - larger color screen & 14hour rechargable battery life make the Rino 520cx one of the best gps on the market . I got these ones for for other people. I have a rino 530

Wonderful GPSr lacking only a really good Basemap. Yes, the Basemap is 100k, but the features are more that of a NatGeo's 500k level State Series Topo with little in the way of topographic detail. Worth Every Penny otherwise, and the map issue is easily resolved by buying maps from Garmin. Suggest the 100k Topo US first, then the 24k Topo if you really need the detail. Radio works fine and the unit displays an error circle in map mode, it even displays circles of proximity alert around waypoints that you've set up that way. you have to download a number of applications from Garmin when you register the unit if you want several of the base functions (Map Installation, waypoint collections, etc.) and I recommend that you do download those Apps.
