Garmin nüvi 2495LMT 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I'm updating my review below... I noticed for some time now that I'm no longer getting the ads that so offended me (below)... I had another question for Garmin and asked customer support today if they discontinued the ads. I was told that they discontinued them about a year ago in response to customer concerns.

That impresses the hell out of me and, since I'm a total fan of the product other than that rectified issue, I'm revising my review to 5 stars and retracting the concern I voiced below.

Incidentally, I received great customer service just now. All is forgiven and I'd buy this product again. Just sayin...

I'm a big fan of Garmin GPS products... However, I chose 1-star to make a point.

The "Lifetime Traffic" is part of why I chose this product. What Garmin fails to disclose up front is that the traffic provider (antennae in power cord) sends advertisements to the Garmin device. These pop up regularly and take up an rectangular area about 2/3 the size of a standard postage stamp in the upper left quadrant of the map (where the traffic notification icons appear).

I don't mind having local product offerings available on the device on demand, but not on the map. There is no option to disable this feature and, contrary to what I was told when I called Garmin to complain, these remain on the screen when the vehicle is in motion... the only way I have found to get the advertisement off the map is to select it and then go back to the map... and this fix is temporary until it pops up again.

My first Garmin nuvi 2495 LMT worked great for about two weeks before it froze, crashed, went dark and stayed that way. Nothing I tried would get it to work again. So I returned it through Amazon for another one. This one worked for about a month before the same thing happened. It died during a cross country trip when I was depending on it. Fortunately, I had my smart phone along, but the whole point of buying the Garmin was to have a larger screen devoted simply to route directions. For two of these devices to freeze, crash and die within 90 days is unacceptable. I would not buy another one.

October 20, 2013 update: I have now had to have this replaced twice because the Bluetooth function stopped working. After over a month of the "engineers trying to troubleshoot" there was still no solution so I requested replacement. I am very appreciative that Garmin replaced my product for the second time showing that they do stand behind their reputation. However, because of repeated problems, I am now downgrading my rating from 5-star to 2-star. I had liked this model very much when I purchased it but I can no longer recommend it.

July 29, 2013 update: I have again lost my Bluetooth feature (see below) - in the middle of a phone call. Despite Garmin tech support trouble shooting, nothing resolved. Problem escalated to "the engineers" and it is 10 days since losing the feature. I do not believe this is a reliable Bluetooth product.

September 15, 2012 update: yesterday I lost my Bluetooth feature and in the process of using the Web-updater service provided by Garmin, I discovered that there are many other voice option that can be downloaded. So I need to retract my "negative" feature mentioned above. (After the update, my Bluetooth connection was restored even though my phone is not specifically on the Garmin compatibility list.)

August 31, 2012, update (20 days after initial review): I'm still learning, and I just tried out the voice activation and am very pleased with the technology. Normally I have trouble with my voice not being understood with voice activation products and/or systems, but the Garmin 2495LMT recognized what I was saying the first time I said a command and every time after that!

August 11, 2012 (Original review): Unfortunately, my "old" (only 2 years) Garmin stopped working and I needed to replace it.

I have had a Garmin before and loved it. Bought a new Nuvi2495LMT, have had it a week, and cannot get the programs to load. There is no owner's manual, only a program to download one. The print is so small you need a magnifying glass. Needed to print it again with the printed pages scaled larger and print one sheet to a page, not two as is the default. When you plug the unit into a computer and open the Garmin website, it is supposed to recognize the unit. This only occurs maybe one out of 8 attempts. I downloaded the additional drivers as suggested by Garmin. But when I downloaded the Garmin software I got an error notice that I should redo it. This became a frustrating viscious cycle of downloading and rebooting and it was always the same result. Tried to download maps, took 30 minutes, showed 100% success and then another error message informing me to redo the download. Another vicious cycle that repeats itself. Been trying to get the downloads to work for about 7 days since some reviews said they had to try it multiple times to get it to work. Sent two emails to Garmin, but no replies. Have set on the phone, listening to recordings for more than an hour. I will return it. Don't waste your time. By the way, I have an office with the latest computers running current Windows 7 Professional software, gigs of memory since we do graphic work and a dedicated high speed internet line. I have tried this on several different computers also. I have also loaded all the drivers suggested by Garmin. I cannot spend another wasted minute on this.

UPDATE: Garmin replaced the unit after hours on the phone, new one works perfect! So, I guess I'm a happy camper now.
