Lifetime updates and while I haven't found a perfect navigation device (as far as accuracy), this one is very very good.

This is my third Garmin, they are the best. Love the 2300, it is more slim, has a more sensitive screen and newer options.

Bought this for my wife quite some time ago. It's been working without any issues. I've seen complaints about the proprietary power adapter which doesn't pose an issue for us. It does seem to change the directions to the same location once in a while. we don't know based on what. The only feature I don't care for is that it keeps showing where you have been driving. We haven't checked if that can be turned off though. So far we have not tried to upload a map upgrade, so I can't comment on that.

Bought this along with the portable friction mount. The mount is definitely worth the purchase if you are going to use the Garmin on the dash. This Garmin is easy to use and come with lifetime updates. I have yet to update mine. So, I am unaware how long it takes. I have heard it can take a while.

The only reason I bought another Garmin GPS was to get lifetime map updates. My husband travels a lot and needed the feature. For someone who thought he never wanted a GPS, he sure likes using it since I got him one!

OK, upped this to 4 stars as I was able to install the current maps without having to buy a micro SD card. I do like the brightness of the screen display, but continue to be baffled as to why Garmin needs a different user interface for each model. This one seems the least intuitive of the varous models I've had. I'm also not sure the 'routes' function works as well as the one on my (now dead) 780.
----------------

This will be my 5th Garmin and while I have little doubt it will function as expected, there were two surprises that cause me additional problems. One caveat, this is to mount on my motorcycle, which has already accommodated two different Garmins in the last several years and for that reason I tend to buy discontinued units and take the chance as it is cheaper than getting a waterproof Zumo unit.

Problem 1. This is powered by a micro USB port, NOT the mini USB port I am used to. Hence the power supply I already have installed needs modification or replacement. This means I need a different power supply or an adapter. My problem, given my unique application.

Problem 2. Upon registration, I tried to install updated maps only to find out that I need a SM card to install ANY current maps on the device. Cheez! This device was new only a year ago and it has insufficent memory for even the SW maps in US, let alone lower 48 states? What BS is this? A brand new unit that doesnt have the memory to update its maps?

Anyway, if I find that I am wrong, I'll modify my review. Until then caveat emptor!

I chose Garmin because of the reputation of their GPS units. Their systems are even featured in Microsoft Flight Simulator, which I use a lot, so I figured they have to be worth owning. I was however, disappointed in my first Garmin purchase.

I bought the Garmin 2300LM and it worked great until the first time I tried to update the maps. After using it for about a week, I registered the GPS on the Garmin web site and then tried to use both the Garmin Lifetime Map Updater that came with the unit and another program called the Garmin Map Updater v2.7.10 (that I downloaded from the company's web site) for my first North America map update. I never successfully updated the map however, because on each attempt, I got an "insufficient space" error message. Both updater programs suggested that I select a map of a smaller area (e.g. the U.S. Northeast, U.S. Southeast, etc.).

I called Garmin tech support and had been holding for about 35 minutes when someone finally answered. I explained my trouble and the tech said that he had to connect me with a "software support" tech. When that person came on the line, she asked me to hold while she looked something up. While on hold this second time, Garmin's phone system or the tech disconnected me and I had to call back. After being on hold another half hour, I talked to a third tech who said that I would have to buy a microSD memory card, insert it into the 2300LM and install the "remainder of the maps" on the it. The tech said that I couldn't fit the new North America map in the unit's internal storage. I was disappointed because supposedly the Garmin had free lifetime map updates but I had to "jump through hoops" to get them and I had to buy extra equipment (the microSD card) to use that service.
