Functionally, there is almost no difference. As noted on the Amazon site, however, the 52 is a newer version of the 50 -- and, if you compare only the 5-inch screens, is only about $25 more. At the moment, there are 264 negative reviews for the 50 out of a total of 4021 reviews. Many of those negative reviews were written months and years ago, but there are several common issues. I bought the 52 to have the latest version of Garmin's hardware and software, and to avoid (hopefully) all the problems cited for the older model. There are already several (21) negative reviews for the 52, but at least some of them are just whining. I experienced one minor problem loading the maps into my 52, but customer service quickly and efficiently resolved the issue.
