Too big and bulky,

This review is from: Garmin Hard Carrying Case for Approach, Oregon, and Dakota Series Handheld GPS (Electronics)
This carry case for the Garmin Oregon GPS is too big and bulky to use. It looks like it was designed for the Colorado model and they just applied it to the Oregon model. Sure it works, but it is way to tall. It could be an inch shorter. The Oregon mounts inside via an attach strap and velcro which puts it at the far bottom end with an inch of dead space at the top. Also, it is way too thick (2.25"), as it has to be to accomodate that big attach clip and velcro inside. And the attach strap on the outside (velcro) to attach to your pants belt, well it is backwards. To use it, leave the velcro attached and unhook your belt from your pant loops and thread it through the case loop. The case does have a quality carabiner attached and is quality made. And it is made, so when you open the case, when it is on your belt, it opens 90 degrees with support straps so the GPS can be read at belt level without taking it out of the case. I will get a smaller beltloop type soft case like a Caselogic or similar to tot my Oregon with me.

This was not made for the Oregon. It has a ludicrous amount of extra space where the Colorado's antenna would fit. It cannot be sealed in any way which is lame because I don't want fine dust getting in and scratching up my screen.
Aside from that though, it's very sturdy feeling. I got it mostly for hiking in wooded areas so I wouldn't destroy it while hiking through brush and it serves that purpose well. It absorbs physical impact and is also pretty convenient for flip down use if you hook it on to the shoulder strap of your pack. I wish there was a weatherproof option that was an inch shorter but since there is not, this will have to do.

This case fits my Garmin Oregon 400t perfectly. Inside the case there is a latch that attaches the GPS to the case so when you open the case the GPS doesnt fall out. If you hang the case from you backpack strap, or waist belt, you can open the case and operate the GPS easily. The case has a hard shell that protects the GPS from impact or drop. I am not sure, but the nylon seems to be the kind that repels water, but the case doesnt seal hermeticaly, therefore I would avoide moisture. Great case, Henry

This case does protect my GPS, but not in the way I expected. I assumed it would have a zipper or velcro that sealed it closed, in addition to the strap/clip. This is important to me because I frequently use my gps to locate slot canyon drop in points, and then I want to seal the gps from the fine sand that often blows through slot canyons. In short, the case will protect your gps, but it won't do much to keep out the elements.

Protects my Garmin Oregon well. But a bit larger than it needs to be (extra space at top of case, and too thick), which is annoying.

The stitching for the carabiner and belt loop gave out the first time I used it, after about 30 minutes. I got home, opened the case, and the carabiner fell off. It's either a poor design or poor quality control.
Other than that, it's quite a bit larger than it needs to be but I like the basic design.

My wife bought this case for our new Garmin Colorado. My initial thought was way too much money for just a case. My second thought was it's too bulky.
Then we took the new purchase hiking in the Adirondack Mountains. I'm very happy with the purchase. The case is wonderful, it attached easily/securely to my back pack, it allowed me to open, look and close the case with one hand (once I got use to the buckle). My GPS kept getting the signals even when the case was closed. And the case gives protection to the screen and from rain. Lastly it's a good place to store it when it's not being used. I even pull the batteries from my GPS and store them in the case.

I bought this largely for storage and when packing my Oregon in luggage, not so much for use outdoors. For fun, I took it hiking with the Oregon 550 installed, and found it actually works very well on the trail in spite of being a bit large and bulky (my initial perception). For hiking, try installing it on a main pack strap near your chest. When you open it, the GPS is clipped into the inside of the case with a clip and strap at the back, much like the carabiner/strap that came with your GPS, then cinches down with velcro so it doesn't move around inside the case. The unit stays in the half that is opposite the external attachment strap and carabiner, and some thin webbing on each side prevents the case from opening past 90 degrees, meaning it is then parallel to the ground and at a perfect viewing height if mounted on your chest.
The carabiner is easily removed if you don't need it. Below the biner is a velcro/nylon strap with loop that attaches readily to a variety of things, much like the back of a camera case has. You can't see any of it in the picture here on Amazon. The gray strap with the black plastic buckle sticking out in the picture is part of the closure system, not for attachment to your gear. When reading this review, don't confuse the gray straps outside with the black strap and plastic clip inside the case. The case doesn't allow for use of the 550's built in camera, but removal from the case for using the camera would take maybe 15 seconds, as would replacing it when you are done, so it isn't a big deal if you aren't in a hurry. As far as protection, I doubt you will find anything that comes close and still allows for ready use while on the trail. |
