4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
This is worth the money. The unit is fairly heavy and uses a combination of gravity and friction to stay in place. The 3 "legs" are flexible, so will mold to fit most dashboards. I like it for two reasons: 1) the GPS is a little closer to your eyes and with the small screens on the i2 and i3, it is much easier to see and 2) my suction mount stopped working entirely and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Garmin makes better GPS than mounting kits
This kit comes with the friction mounting device and with a hook that can permanently be attached to the windshield, just in case one does not like the kit, I suppose. It does what it says it does, it sits wherever you put it on the dashboard. The dashboard, however, has to be flat for the kit to sit properly. Under the feet there is a thin tissue that keeps the...

This is worth the money. The unit is fairly heavy and uses a combination of gravity and friction to stay in place. The 3 "legs" are flexible, so will mold to fit most dashboards. I like it for two reasons: 1) the GPS is a little closer to your eyes and with the small screens on the i2 and i3, it is much easier to see and 2) my suction mount stopped working entirely and it was very annoying to be driving along and then have the GPS thud to the dash. I would have given it a 5 star rating except the mount will vibrate around a bit if you're on a very bumpy road. On a side note, you can save about $5 through other internet sites.

I live in California where they allow people to be distracted talking on cell phones while they drive but make it against the law to unobtrusively mount a tiny GPS unit like the Garmin i5 on the windshield. I guess the cell phone industry makes larger political contributions than the GPS industry. Anyway, this friction mounting kit seems to work well although I haven't tried it under really bumpy or rough driving conditions (and hope I don't have to). It looks just like the picture, is fairly heavy so it stays put on the dash, and the GPS unit attaches easily. I bought mine from Amazon and they shipped the right model, unlike the other reviewer who bought from Office Depot. In my opinion this is about as good a solution you can get for a non-permanent attachment. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the price is high. The retail price is ridiculously high and thankfully Amazon had it at a good discount but even with the discount the price is too high. I notice Garmin likes to do that with all its accessories since once you've bought the main unit, you're roped in with the other stuff. At least this item is sturdy so it should last as long or longer than the GPS unit itself.

Latex construction with a firm grip on my dashboard. The best part is the mobility! I can remove the friction mount in 1 second and place it in another car with almost no effort. This works very well on road trips when you're riding in someone else's car that needs a GPS.

Surprisingly, the mount is not that heavy. I brake heavily in my car because I live in the hills, but the friction mount doesn't slip very much. It does slip a little every now and then. The friction mount has never completely slipped off my dashboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more windshield suction cup marks for me!, July 10, 2006

I bought the GPS Friciton Mounting Kit because I was going on a business trip to California and it is illegal there to have anything stuck to your windshield. I loved this item! I use it for my Streetpilot i5 now, no matter where I'm using it! I never use the suction cup mount now. I don't have to worry about it moving or falling off the windshield. It has fit on the dash of any car I've tried, my own and rentals. I bought a medium sized camcorder bag and this fits in that bag, along with the Streetpilot, the power cord, the USB cord and some spare rechargeable batteries. It weighs about 2 pounds, so when I am flying, I tend to pack it in my checked bags but it wouldn't be that bad to pack it with my carry-on bags. All in all, I love this and thought it was well worth the money to enhance my Streetpilot.

This thing is wonderful. Does not mar or goo up the dash. Just sits there and holds the GPS anywhere in the car. Don't leave home without it.

I have tried this in two vehicles with a Garmin Streetpilot i5. It works perfectly, does not move around, even during emergency braking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, February 14, 2007

California law prohibits the use of windshield mounts and I did not want to permanently stick a pad on the dashboard to use the standard suction mount. So I purchased this friction mount. It is also very convenient to move from car to car.

It doesn't slip even during moderately spirited driving. It will fall off only under extreme hard acceleration or turns.

I only wish that Garmin would include this free of charge with the navigation unit since they know windshield mounts are illegal in California. Chopping off one star for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The kit is wonderful!, February 13, 2007
This review is from: Garmin Friction Mounting Kit for StreetPilot i2 and i3 (010-10675-00) (Accessory)
The kit solved my concerns and works perfectly! The Garmin now sits safely on my dashboard and has never moved unless I move it. I don't have to mount it on the window and worry about my car being broken into to have it stolen. It also used to fall from the window on occassion and now it never falls.

Works exactly thw way it is supposed to. Easy to move between vehicles.
Better than mounting on windshield (illegal in CA) because the suction would fail in high heat areas and unit would fall down.

Works fine, lasts a long time. Unit does not move around at all on the dash. Holds Garmin GPS snugly. Just be careful when ordering on line, they are made different for different models of the GPS (350, etc.)
